Friendship day is usually celebrated worldwide on 30th July, but in India, it is marked on the first Sunday of August. So in that celebration, we have brought you some of the best films that include a budding Friendship between, unusual people that no one would have expected. The Half Of It

The Half of It is a comedy-drama film, written and directed by Alice Wu. It stars Leah Lewis, Daniel Diemer, and Alexxis Lemire, with Enrique Murciano, Wolfgang Novogratz, Catherine Curtin and others. The film follows shy, straight-A student Ellie, who is hired by sweet but inarticulate jock Paul, who needs help winning over a popular girl. But their new and unlikely friendship gets complicated when Ellie discovers she has feelings for the same girl.

It is a modern loose retelling of Cyrano de Bergerac in which teenage Ellie Chu begins writing love letters on behalf of the inarticulate Paul Munsky to his crush, Aster Flores. Watch this film on Netflix.

The Intern (2015)

It is a famous buddy comedy-drama film directed, written and produced by Nancy Meyers. The film stars Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway in the lead roles. The synopsis of the film reads, “Harried fashion entrepreneur Jules gets a surprise boost from Ben, a 70-year-old widower who answers an ad seeking a senior intern.”

The plot then follows a 70-year-old widower who becomes a senior intern at an online fashion website, where he forms an unlikely friendship with the company’s workaholic CEO. It is a heartwarming film with equal funny moments that everyone will enjoy. Watch this film here.

Metal Lords (2022)

Metal Lords follow two kids, Hunter and Kevin, who start a metal band in a high school where exactly two kids care about metal. They can’t find a bassist, but there is this one girl who plays the cello. They need to work together if they’re going to win the Battle of the Bands. Starring Jaeden Martell as Kevin Schlieb, Isis Hainsworth as Emily Spector and Adrian Greensmith as Hunter Sylvester.

The film shows how two friends stick with each other from getting bullied by popular kids and realise their love for metal music. In the journey, they get to know each other even better and become the music lords as they should. Watch this film here.

Late Night (2019)

The synopsis of the film reads,” On the verge of being replaced, a longtime talk show host attempts to revamp her brand when a driven woman joins her all-male writers’ room.” It is directed by Nisha Ganatra from a screenplay produced by Mindy Kaling. It stars Emma Thompson as a popular TV host and Mindy Kaling as Molly Patel, the new writer.

When talking about friendships, you wouldn’t imagine a cold boss becoming friends with an unlikely new writer. But it takes a heartfelt turn in this film, as both of them support each other through the hard times. Watch this film here.

The Edge of Seventeen (2016)

The Edge of Seventeen is a coming-of-age movie with an honest, candid, often hilarious look at what it’s like to grow up as a young woman in today’s modern world. Everyone knows that growing up is hard, and life is no easier for high school junior Nadine (Hailee Steinfeld), who is already at peak awkwardness when her all-star older brother Darian (Blake Jenner) starts dating her best friend Krista (Haley Lu Richardson).

All at once, Nadine feels more alone than ever, until the unexpected friendship of a thoughtful boy (Hayden Szeto) gives her a glimmer of hope that things just might not be so terrible after all. The film also Woody Harrelson as Nadine’s History teacher, mentor and reluctant friend, who helps her through her no-friends-phase. Watch this film here.

Moxie (2021)

The film follows Vivian (Hadley Robinson), a seemingly shy 16-year-old, who has always preferred to keep her head down and fly under the radar. But when the arrival of a new student (Alycia Pascual-Peña) forces her to examine the unchecked behaviour of her fellow students running rampant at her high school, Vivian realizes she’s fed up.

Inspired by her mother’s (Amy Poehler) rebellious past, Vivian anonymously publishes an underground zine called Moxie to expose bias and wrongdoing in her high school and unexpectedly sparks a movement.

Now at the centre of a revolution, Vivian begins to forge new friendships with other young women and allies, reaching across the divide of cliques and clubs as they learn to navigate the highs and lows of high school together. The film also has amazing soundtracks. Watch the film here.
