Uncle From Another World Episode 3 Review: Demonetised And Desperate

Takafumi’s friend has got a lot more up her sleeve in Uncle From Another World Episode 3, as we learn more about how bad the Uncle actually was at this transporting into another world chicanery. Let’s get right into the review!

Uncle From Another World Episode 3 Overview

Uncle From Another World or Isekai Ojisan in original Japanese is a comedy and fantasy anime based on a manga written by Shindeiru Hotondo and serialized in Web Comic Apanta. The series is developed by studio AtelierPontdarc and will be their first foray into the world of anime.

The show is being directed by Shigeki, who has been a part of the production of several anime in the past, including Darling in the Franxx and Blue Exorcist, although this is also his first venture into directing an anime. The Episode is also called Isekai Ojisan Episode 3 and Isekai Uncle Episode 3. Click here to read the review of the previous episode of the show.

Uncle From Another World Episode 3 Review- Girl Talk

This one turned out to be a lot better than the previous outing for a variety of reasons, the biggest one being less of a reliance on the isekai and focusing more on the real-world aspect of the story. The other world in the show is decent, but the stories told there aren’t very interesting because they are as generic as you can get, except for the characters involved in them. It doesn’t matter if you parody Attack On Titan if the base your story stands on isn’t strong enough to carry it.

Speaking of parodies, the show’s story structure relies a lot on referential humour and not much else to maintain its distinction as a comedy anime. It is a kind of comedy that is hard to keep going for a long time because there are only so many things you can reference naturally before looking like you are out of ideas. Some things, like the Nintendo-Sega rivalry, make perfect sense as part of the show’s timeline and the Uncle’s character. Other things, like the show’s description of the current internet, might not be so sensible.

There was a lot of Youtube talk in this episode. The first thing to be appreciated about that is the fact that the show uses the actual word for the world-famous website and not a knockoff as most other anime do. That, and directly referencing things such as Sony’s dominance in Japan and the aforementioned Nintendo-Sega rivalry, is a lot better than “Jimtendo vs Mega”. I wonder why Isekai Ojisan can reference these things like it’s nothing but other shows like Steins Gate are too afraid to do so? Did the producers of this have to pay for the right to use the names of those companies? If so, this is a truly broken system that needs fixing.

Being a Youtuber might be the number 1 career that the kids in Japan want from their lives, but Uncle From Another World Episode 3 did a good job in explaining why it shouldn’t be that way. It directly referenced the Youtube Adpcalypse from 2018 and how much it hurt the smaller youtube content creators and showcased how putting your entire livelihood in the hands of a company which can change its algorithms to kill your channel on a whimsy is a bad idea. However, the way the characters overcame that issue was a weird one. The Japanese internet must be very different from its western counterpart for that to make much sense.

More was revealed about Uncle’s isekai past as we saw more of his relationship with the elf girl and just how stupid he was when interacting with her. There are some parallels to be drawn between this relationship and the one between Fujimiya and Takafumi. Still, not many, as Fujimiya wasn’t really an angel to Takafumi in the past, as we saw in this episode. Uncle and Takafumi being able to see through each other’s dumbness but not their own is a nice touch.

Verdict

Uncle From Another World Episode 3 was a funny and relevant outing that featured the best of the show so far and showcased its strength as best it could.
