Remarriage and Desires Review: A Satirical K-Drama Driven By Revenge

Remarriage and Desires (블랙의 신부) is a satirical drama released on Netflix on 15 July 2022. It portrays the Korean high society that deals with marriages and remarriages only as a way to move higher in society. The Korean Series is directed by Kim Jeong-min and written by Lee Geun-yeong. There are 8 episodes in total with a runtime of about almost 1 hour.

The cast of the series includes Kim Hee-sun as Seo Hye-seung, Lee Hyun-wook as Lee Hyung-joo, Jung Yoo-jin as Jin Yoo-hui, Cha Ji-yeon as Choi Yoo-sun, Park Hoon as Cha Seok-jin, Park Sang-hoon as Lee Jun-ho, Kim Sa-kwon, Lady Jane as station announcer, Kim Mi-kyung as Lee Hyung-joo’s mother, Kim Yoon-seo, Lee Doo-seok, Jung Woo-hyuk and Yang Mal-bok.

Netflix’s synopsis of the series reads:

Through an exclusive matchmaking agency that caters to the ultrarich, a woman plots revenge against her ex-husband’s scheming mistress.

The series starts off grimly, with a man standing on the edge of a high-rise building and about to take his own life. Meanwhile, Seo Hye-seung is frantically trying to reach that person while driving to the location. We get to know that the man is Kang Nam-sik, Hye-seung’s husband, who jumped off the building.

Prior to that, he had asked for a divorce because he was in love with a colleague of his, named, Jin Yoo-hui. Somehow, they get separated but on an audit in the company, Nam-sik gets blamed for embezzling money and Yoo-hui even accuses him of blackmailing and raping her. Not being able to take the betrayal from his lover and after losing everything in his life, he decides to take the extreme step.

Hye-seung blames Yoo-hui for everything but tries to move on in her life, until she meets her again at Rex. It is a matchmaking company that believes that marriage is a business and they are the best in this field. The company is made especially for the rich-elite class people and even they are ranked from silver and diamond to the top black class (which includes the ultra rich).

At first, Hye-seung had gone there to cancel her membership, but on seeing Yoo-hui living a happy life and looking for another rich guy to play with, something burns up in her and she decides to take revenge. From exposing Yoo-hui’s affair with her husband to stealing away the partners who caught her eyes, Hye-seung is determined to make her fall to the bottom.

But it’s not just about these two, Rex’s CEO Choi Yoo-sun to other women in the series, all have only one goal, to step up their social status and wealth through good business deals or marry a black class member. And Lee Hyung-joo is the man that everyone wants and desires, but who is the one that makes a place in his heart?

All the characters in the series are either driven by the thought of revenge or trapping a good catch to marry. Given the title, although they all are looking for remarriage, there are hardly any marriage or romance-like moments in the series. Talking about desires, then everyone just desires to have an upper hand or kill someone to get what they want.

Final Thoughts: Stream It or Skip It?

Remarriage and Desires on Netflix is a melodramatic drama about people blinded by revenge. It is a long watch with various turns and twists in every episode, but to get to the interesting reveals you will have to sit through a number of dragging scenes. At some point, it just becomes funny even though they don’t intend to, like the scene where the female leads start having a dance battle at the masquerade party.

The cinematography is definitely mentionable and the acting too, to some extent. However, I found Jin Yoo-hui’s evilness a bit animated at times and don’t really understand what the character’s ulterior motive was. They tried to pull off something like The World of the Married drama, in terms of the suspense and twists at each turn. But it fails to create the same build-up and is just a drag.

The drama is meant to be a satire which shows how the power dynamics work among rich people and how people can do anything to reach that top level, like a marriage disguising a business deal. It does bring out this aspect of the plot well.

Remarriage and Desires is streaming on Netflix.
