The contestants except for Keyma, who won the immunity in the last episode, were asked to pick a number from the sack and stand accordingly. In front of them were the 7 ingredients that they would have to use in their dishes. But there was a second set of ingredients that were covered under the cloche. The contestants had the choice to either cook with the ingredient that they can see or opt for the hidden one.

But if they opt for the one under the cloche, they can’t change it. There were going to be 2 rounds in total. In round one, the contestants who will be in the bottom 3 spots, will have to compete further in round 2. Out of the three, one will be eliminated from the competition. Most of the contestants were going the safe route and choosing what was in front of them.

Except for Julie, who didn’t know how to work with lion mane’s mushroom and thus went for the cloche. It was revealed to be a better choice for her as the ingredient was golden beetroot. Similarly, Sarah also went for the cloche instead of grapefruit and was presented with lemon myrtle leaves, which could be a hit or a miss for her.

After the 60 minutes were up, Alvin was called upon first who presented creamed corn egg drop soup with charred corn sambal and was met with instant applause from the judges. Followed by Daniel who made a wattleseed sponge, ice cream and a chocolate ganache in wattleseed sauce. They have a similar taste to coffee and his dish was a perfect blend of flavours and sweetness.

Next up was Mindy with celeriac steak and sambal blachan, and then Aldo presented his steak with quandong puree which was said to be too grainy as opposed to having a smooth texture. After that Billie brought up her Panna cotta made with artichoke and was commended for bringing out a good balance of flavours but the texture was off.

Sarah made cod fish steak with lemon myrtle and the judges were quite impressed with the dish. At last, Julie presented her golden beetroot and goat cheese terrine which was complimented for its visual presentation but goat cheese dominated the main ingredient which was beetroot and it could put her at the bottom.

In round 1 of MasterChef Australia Season 14 Episode 50, Alvin, Sarah and Mindy were applauded for staying true to the given ingredients and bringing the best out of them and thus they were also safe from elimination today. Unfortunately, Aldo, Billie and Julie’s dishes were not up to the mark and thus they have to compete in round 2 for immunity.

MasterChef Australia Season 14 Episode 50: Round 2

Since Julie had already opted for the cloche option, she was now faced with the lion mane’s mushroom again. But she had the safety net of immunity pin, which she could use anytime before the time is up and she would join others in the safety stand. Billie and Aldo didn’t choose the cloche option thus, they were shown the hidden ingredients.

Aldo was given cucumbers and Billie had to work with wasabi. All the 3 contestants were perplexed by the given situation and the unfavourable ingredients. Stakes were very high as it was potentially their last time cooking in the MasterChef kitchen, in case they get eliminated today. And due to the stress and pressure, Julie decided to use the immunity pin in the middle as she didn’t think she could pull it off against Aldo and Billie.

That left a 50-50 situation between the two and after much trial and error, Aldo presented the judges with cucumber salad with spanner crab and lemon zest in cucumber oil. They found it to be very modern looking compared to Aldo’s past dishes and genuinely liked the mild flavours brought out in the dish.

Lastly, Billie made wasabi beef tartare, wasabi mayo and tempura wasabi leaf. The judges loved how she had used wasabi so extensively in the dish yet the flavour wasn’t too strong or off. Especially the tempura leaves left a good crispy impression and ultimately made Billie the winner out of the two.
