Deaimon Episode 2 Overview

Deaimon is a slice of life, gourmet, and drama anime focusing on a Japanese sweets shop. It is based on a manga written by Rin Asano. 

The anime adaptation is developed by Studio Encourage Films, an outfit that has produced many other anime such as Etotama, Hitorijime My Hero, and Isekai Cheat Magician. The show is being produced with Fumitoshi Oizaki (A Centaur’s Life, Etotama) serving as director, Reiko Yoshida (Blue Period, A Silent Voice) supervising the scripts, and Sakae Shibuya (Girl Friend Note, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood) designing the characters and overseeing the animation.

Deaimon Episode 2 Review – Music For Happiness!

Similar to the previous episode, the opening songs and characters bring a sweet world to us where the sense of fulfilment is unmatched. With just the name of the episode, “Echoing Through the Hydrangea”, our hearts start harmonizing with the feel-good atmosphere this anime is trying to bring to us. The depiction of wagashi sheets is very artistic, accurate, and befitting of an anime released in the spring. Let’s talk about this a bit more in this Deaimon Episode 2 Review!

After the solid start we had in the last episode, Deaimon proceeds to introduce one of the workers in the local wagashi shop of Kyoto named Mitsuru. We already had a sneak peek of her last week, but in this episode, we go on an in-depth journey with her about her daily life. Like most of the characters in this show, she is very sensible, hard-working, takes care of her younger siblings, and works at the wagashi shop. She also mentors Itsuka after work and seems to love to play the guitar in her spare time. However, she is not open about her musical hobby and keeps it hidden from everyone.

Choosing music as a hobby for Mitsuru is a great choice plot-wise. Nagomu left his house all those years ago to also pursue his music dream. This will give both characters a chance to bond further in the future, and Mitsuru might even look up to Nagomu as a mentor. Similarly, Mitsuru being the eldest out of 5 siblings again gives her character a deep touch of maturity and responsibility, supporting our understanding as to why she works part-time in the wagashi shop. It also explains the easy-going and big-sister relationship she has with Itsuka. She is also smoothly acting as a bridge between Nagomu and Itsuka, enabling them to build their relationship further.

This episode dealt with an important theme- responsibility. In many (especially Asian) households, pursuing art as a dream and career goal is not an option. Aside from the financial issues and lack of general opportunities, the culture is also not very supportive. Children are often asked to choose something more practical as art often does not make money. I’m glad Mitsuru’s family was supportive enough of her and her dreams, and are encouraging her to pursue her form of happiness.

Another important theme was dealt with in Deaimon Episode 2– doxing. The modern world has provided us with platforms and outlets for almost every skill we can have, but danger also accompanies it. Such situations are unwanted and can often lead to bigger issues, but thankfully the presence of mind of certain characters saved Mitsuru. It reminds us- that one can never be too careful!

Deaimon has a multi-generational cast, and the outlooks and life stories of each of them are very inspiring and are conveyed well. A lot of overall positivity and support from every character for each other, even though they might themselves know how hard the path can be very well. Music being a big part of life for two characters (till now) has provided us with soothing tunes, and we cannot wait for more. Animation is top-notch perfect for the story style, and pairs amazingly with the regional accents of the characters.

As peachy as I wanted Deaimon Episode 2 to be, it also had some problems. We had just established the connection with our main protagonists and suddenly had an episode dealing with a side character. Although it was a smooth ride, the previous episode feels rather cutoff. Nagomu’s “crying while selling sweets” action feels rather gimmicky and cartoonish. Deaimon already has tiny moments spread throughout the show to provide comic relief, and this seems unnecessary.

Verdict

Deaimon Episode 2 hummed a beautiful melody of casts trying to find their happiness their own way. They may face issues while doing so, but that is only building the bonds stronger amongst themselves.
