The Last Letter From Your Lover premiered on 23rd July 2021 on Netflix. Based on Jojo Moyes’ 2012 novel of the same name, the film is directed by Augustine Frizzell and written by Nick Payne and Esta Spalding. The 110-minute long British romantic drama stars Shailene Woodley, Felicity Jones, Callum Turner, Nabhaan Rizwan, and Emma Appleton alongside other cast members.

My heart goes all gooey every time I see a romantic drama, needless to say, I am a sucker for Love stories that make your heart go “this is love and it’s beautiful.” And when it’s a British love story set in the 1960s with epistolary involved, you have all my attention! Adding to its vast library of romantic drama, Netflix brings to its viewers The Last Letter From Your Lover, a story with a lot of sentiment, emotional complexity, and love history!

The Last Letter From Your Lover sets itself in two love stories in two different centuries- one set in the 1960s, while one is set in contemporary times. The former revolves around Jennifer and Anthony, who fall in love in the 1960s’, but Jennifer being a married woman is the obstacle these lovers fight with every moment. It ain’t east but for all they know, it’s worth it for they love each other to skin and bones. Meanwhile, the latter revolves around Ellie and Rory, who work for The London Chronicle and establish a bond over time as they dive into Jennifer and Anthony’s love story when Ellie mistakenly comes across one of their letters and wishes to know more.

As the film progresses, we head back and forth in these stories walking into the world of these lovers in two different times and spaces united by love and emotional complexities.

There is a very beautiful vintage Hollywood vibe to The Last Letter From Your Lover, everything ranging from the locations to the setup and the characters add to this beautiful narrative. While the film is beautifully set and drawn out at certain points you feel lost in terms of connection with the characters. Since the story hops back and forth in this interwoven throughout, the connection is oftentimes charred only for the viewers to feel a severed connection that they try to reestablish over and over again!

The female characters in the storyline are united by the forces of unrequited love initially, only for them to have a happy ending. The Last Letter From Your Lover at certain points ceases to establish the boundary that distinguishes women over time. Undeniably, love is a timeless force and there are various aspects to emotions that stay the same over years but to feel little to no difference in both the storylines doesn’t add much to the film’s advantage.

The Last Letter From Your Lover is not the perfect romantic drama but is a pleasure for the vintage vibes it brings with itself. Despite its highs and lows the film is a good one time watch as it’ll make you feel some kind of a way but won’t leave you crying by the end! A lil’ melodrama in love stories goes a long way. If you decide to watch The Last Letter From Your Lover watch it for its smaller wholesome bit like perfect and aesthetic sunlight that beams through the blue sky in beautiful locations, few vintage cars and beautiful people and all.
