Why The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Should Become a Netflix Series

We are entering the age where popular stories are no longer subjugated to one medium. Video games and tv are becoming one in the same. And now that Skyrim is over 10-years old, I’m starting to really want some sort of Elder Scrolls Netflix series.

We’ve already seen this happen with The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt, which is one of the best games like Skyrim. And while the success of the first 2 seasons The Witcher TV series was heavily influenced by the books that inspired the game, that success has led me to think a Skyrim Netflix series would do just as well.

There have been rumors of an Elder Scrolls TV series on the horizon, it has never actually been confirmed. There’s no guarantee that the show would even take place in a part of Tamriel we are familiar with. If it does eventually become a reality, however, here are 5 reasons why I think it would be great as a Netflix series.

1. Elder Scrolls Already Has a Huge Fanbase

If I had to pick just one reason why Skyrim should be its own series, it’s this. The Elder Scrolls games have been around since 1994, and it has multiple generations already on the edge of their seats waiting for the next game.

Now, I’m not a gambling man, but I’d be willing to bet if Netflix were to confirm they are working on a TV show that everyone would want to watch it. There would be those who don’t want to see the games tainted by a poor adaptation, sure, but even the early critics wouldn’t be able to help themselves from streaming it.

2. The World and Lore Already Exists

While the fanbase is important to the success of such a hypothetical series, the content is also critical. One of the things that made The Witcher so good was that the story was already tried and true. There was a depth to it beyond what you saw on the screen. And Skyrim has that depth.

I’ll admit, I can see how such a project could go crash and burn in the wrong hands, but I have hope that Netflix would do it right.

3. The Skyrim Soundtrack Is Epic Enough for TV

One of the most memorable things about movies, TV, and games is the soundtracks that accompany them. And Skyrim has that in spades. The game offers one of the most epic video game soundtracks you’ll hear.

If you happen to enjoy listening to epic video game soundtracks, it’s highly likely you’ve found yourself listening to the iconic, slightly Nordic score that Skyrim is famous is for. Now imagine putting that into a show!

4. Gaming References Galore

Since so many people have played the game, or at least been near someone who plays it, a Netflix series would be ripe with opportunity for great references. Skyrim has spurred a plethora of memes, jokes, and culture since it first arrived and fans would appreciate seeing them throughout the show.

Can’t you just imagine some guard going on about how he took an arrow in the knee? I can, and it’s exactly what I want.

5. It Can Be Turned Into a Cartoon or Anime Series

The Witcher isn’t the only example of Netflix taking a popular game series and turning it in to show. Castlevania is on its third season now, and it is widely popular. I think Skyrim could have the potential to do much the same.

While I would still prefer a live-action series, I have a soft spot in my heart for cartoons on Netflix. And though I am trying not to get too hopeful, I do think we’ll get both at some point in the future. There is also the possibility of the game becoming an anime, which would likely suit the style of the show more long term.
