6 Video Games that Should Become an Anime Series

Video games are becoming more and more like movies and TV. I’d even go as far as to argue that video games are becoming something better. Games these days have epic soundtracks, rich character building, and top-tier voice acting. What’s more, when you play a game, you aren’t just a passive viewer, you are an active participant in the story. You even get to choose how the plot plays out in many of today’s AAA titles.

Video games are rising in popularity, and TV Series based on video games are emerging more than ever. Netflix has lead the charge so far with The Witcher and Castlevania receiving overwhelmingly positive feedback, so this type of content is ripe for the picking. With RPG anime on the rise, I am hopeful that more video game anime is on the way. Here are 5 games I think would do great as an anime series.

Dragon Age: Origins

If you don’t already know this, there has already been something akin to a Dragon Age anime. Dawn of the Seeker was an animated feature-length film that was just ok. The core issue here was that the creators tried to take a character-driven game and turn it into a feature-length film with a random new character.

The thing that makes games like Dragon Age so great is the rich interactions and friendships you make along the way. With memorable companion characters like Morrigan from Dragon Age: Origins and Varric from Dragon Age: Inquisition there is already a solid foundation to leap off from. Though I’d suggest we start with a Morrigan series based on where Origins left off and move on from there.

With Dragon Age 4 on its way to our screens now is the opportune time to use a Dragon Age Netflix series to build up that buzz. Teasers and trailers are already being released, so an anime could do great.

Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

The Elder Scrolls series has been around since 1994, and it has multiple generations already on the edge of their seats waiting for the next game. So why not toss in a Skyrim anime series to keep fans intrigued?

Games like Skyrim have the unique advantage of already having a giant fanbase and more than enough content to leap off from. Additionally, the lack of a central main character would allow for a director to really dig deep into the lore.

If it were up to me, I would love to see more about Dragonborn from the past when the land of Skyrim was still young. It seems like there’s already so much history and intrigue to explore there.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Streaming platforms like Netflix have been subtly expanding their anime library for years now, and The Legend of Zelda seems like a perfect fit for this. There are plenty of reasons why a Legend of Zelda Netflix series would be great, but I think the most important one is that it would work as an anime.

The thing that makes games like Legend of Zelda perfect for a transition into an anime series is that they tend to have a central and recognizable main character. The audience already knows and loves the story that surrounds Link, and a series would only expand upon that. I’d even go far as suggesting it would be worth going back and creating an anime series based on Twilight Princess.

There is also the obvious cultural bridge you can draw between Nintendo titles and Japanese culture in general.

Mass Effect 3

I haven’t played an overwhelming amount of games like Mass Effect in my day, but it seems like the perfect example of a series that would make for a great anime. For starters, it’s set in space, there are alien travel companions, and it already feels like a sci-fi anime series. And now with Amazon looking to potentially create a Mass Effect TV series, it seems like the perfect time to take it in more of an anime direction.

With something as character-driven as Mass Effect 3, it also makes a lot of sense to stick to something animated. They could reuse the same voice actors you’ve become accustomed to avoid losing continuity between the game and the series.

Halo 3

Out of all of the Halo games, Halo 3 was by far my favorite. Between the epic soundtrack, intense gameplay, and cinema-like quality of cutscenes it had everything you could ever want from a game. And when you think about it that way, it still has everything you could want from an anime series.

There actually already was a Halo anime movie, and it’s terrific. Halo Legends is the perfect example of how a popular gaming title can be elevated further by the rich detail anime can provide.

I don’t have the highest hopes for a Halo Netflix series, but it does seem possible it could be something Amazon would want to pick up in the years to come.

Horizon Zero Dawn

Horizon Zero Dawn is one of those games that feels cinematic from the very moment you start playing. The struggle of a post-apocalyptic world mixed with an extremely likeably main character make it a perfect story worth adapting into an anime.

It’s also not really out of the question for Japanese animation to be mixed with Horizon Zero Dawn because it’s already happened. The main character, Aloy, is a playable crossover character in the popular title Genshin Impact. Plus the game literally features mechanical dinosaur-like creatures, which already seems like the plot of an anime series.
