Why the Nintendo Switch Is the Best Gaming Console

I’ve been playing video games for most of my life and have had experience with a wide variety of gaming consoles. And while there’s no such thing as a bad console per se, each generation has had a winner. In my opinion, when I look to compare the latest gen Xbox Series X, PS5, and Nintendo Switch, the obvious winner is the Switch.

Sure, the Nintendo Switch doesn’t pack the same power as Xbox or PlayStation consoles, but it really doesn’t have to. The best part of the Switch is the exclusive games and versatility of jumping between docked and handheld modes. Although it doesn’t have the power to run some of the most powerful games on the market, it manages to offer something unique in the market — nostalgia and convenience.

I know there are plenty of people would disagree that the Nintendo Switch is the best console, so here some of the reasons I think it’s better than the Xbox Series X and PS5.

Wonderful Exclusive Games

Exclusive games have been one of the most important aspects of previous console wars, and Nintendo has always had strong grasp of this. With great games like Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Super Smash Bros., and Mario Kart it’s easy to see why many of the best Nintendo Switch games are console exclusives. And that’s really where Nintendo has an advantage over Microsoft and Sony in 2021. While those consoles do still have some exclusives like Halo or Ratchet and Clank, many of those are starting to become cross-platform and even playable on PC.

So if you’re looking for the main reason the Nintendo Switch is superior to it’s competitors, the only thing you really need to do is look at the classic characters and games that don’t exist anywhere else.

An Abundance of Good Indie Games

Although there are indie games available on just about every console, the Nintendo Switch as become a great place for indie developers to thrive. And this is largely due to how the platform supports these developers. With Sony focusing more on major titles and indie support from steam starting to wane, the Switch is your best option for finding new and exciting indie games as well as titles that have been around for a long time.

It’s also worth noting that many of the best indie games on Switch were ported over to the console months or years after their release, providing new life to forgotten games. I myself had the pleasure of discovering and thoroughly enjoying an older indie RPG called Crosscode for the first time, which is something I wouldn’t have found without the Switch.

Portable and Versatile

The exclusive games and indie titles are great, but what really made the Switch revolutionary was the ability to unhook the console from your tv and play on the go. That means if someone else in your home wants to use the TV, you don’t have to stop playing games, you can just go to handheld mode. It also allows you to take your console on the go, which means you can play it in the car, on the train, or during long flights.

And this is really where the Switch completely stands out from it’s competition. The popular of the handheld console has even lead to the creation of the Steam Deck, which isn’t coming out until February 2022.

Reasonably Priced

Video games are an expensive hobby. If you don’t have a ton of money, it can be hard to afford the console, let alone all of the games you want to play with it. Now that the PS5 and Xbox Series X cost just under $500, the Nintendo Switch is a lot cheaper comparatively. With $500, you could by a standard Switch and still have $200 left over to by games and controllers.

There are even multiple tiers to Switch consoles now. You can pick up the new Nintendo Switch OLED for $349, the standard Nintendo Switch for $299, or the handheld Nintendo Switch Lite for just $199.
