The 7 Best Cartoons Like Avatar: The Last Airbender to Watch Right Now

Avatar: The Last Airbender is the best cartoon Series on Netflix right now, and arguably one of the best cartoons of all time. With beautiful character arcs, engaging action, and just the right amount of witty dialogue, it’s hard to find cartoons like Avatar: The Last Airbender worth watching in 2021. Though I can certainly try.

Every animated series I’ve listed below offer similarities to ATLA that will atleast somewhat fill its shoes. Each of these shows offers beautiful animation, action, and character building that will leave you wanting more Episodes.

Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts

Creators: Radford Sechrist, Bill Wolkoff
Total Episodes: 30 episodes
IMDb: 8.4

Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts is an action-packed sci-fi adventure series the whole family can enjoy. The plot follows Kipo, a young girl who finds herself stranded on the surface of a post-apocalyptic world searching for her father. Unfortunately, humans are no longer the dominant species as mutated animals and insects have taken over.

While this cartoon doesn’t directly relate to many of the main themes of Avatar, it does feature some rich character building and more serious concepts. With 3 seasons now available on Netflix, it’s worth a watch.

The Legend of Korra

Creators: Michael Dante DiMartino, Bryan Konietzko
Total Episodes
: 52
IMDb: 8.4

Set in the same world as Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Legend of Korra follows the Avatar who has to follow in Aangs footsteps. With technology suddenly at the center of everything, this series is more about the struggles between benders and non-benders than ever before.

With new original content on it’s way, right now is a great time to watch this series if you haven’t already. It’s basically more ATLA content and offers additional depth to the story.

You can find all episodes of The Legend of Korra on Netflix right now.

The Dragon Prince

Creators: Aaron Ehasz, Jack De Sena, Sasha Rojen
Total Episodes: 27
IMDb Rating: 8.4

If you like Avatar: the Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, then this Netflix original series should be the next cartoon on your list. The plot follows two human princes who form an unlikely bond with an elfin assassin after encountering a dragon egg. They must adventure together to try to bring peace to their warring lands.

The same voice actor that played Sokka voices the main character in The Dragon Prince. If that’s not enough to convince you, the co-creator of this show was also the head writer of ATLA.

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power

Creator: Noelle Stevenson
Total Episodes: 52
IMDb: 7.9

For parents who grew up watching He-Man, She-Ra is basically the female version of that and it’s equally enjoyable. The story follows a young girl named Adora as she takes on the role of She-Ra for the first time. She works together with the princesses of the land to fight off a group of invaders called the Horde.

With some rich character building similar to Avatar: The Last Air Bender, She-Ra offers an excellent action adventure. If you enjoy magic, friendship, and action all mixed up into one, this is the show for you.

And while it is aimed at younger audiences, it’s a great Netflix action series for humans of all ages.

Wakfu

Creators: Anthony Roux
Total Episodes: 71
IMDb: 8.2

Though it often feels like a Netflix Original anime in style and inspiration, Wakfu is actually French animated series based on a video game of the same name. The story is centered around a character named Yugo, a powerful being who has not yet discovered his full power. As the series progresses so do his abilities and friendships along the way.

There is a surprising depth to this series that you might not expect after the first couple of episodes. With 3 seasons currently available on Netflix, there’s a lot to unpack.

Demon Slayer: Kimetzu no Yaiba

Creator: Koyoharu Gotouge
Total Episodes: 26
IMDb Rating: 8.7

Although it is still unclear whether or not Avatar: The Last Airbender is an Anime, it does feature a lot of similarities to the Japanese style of animation. Demon Slayer is one such series that features a lot of the same adventure elements you get from ATLA.

The plot follows a young man named Tanjiro after most of his family is murdered by a demon. He does find that his sister is still alive, however, she is also slowly turning into a demon herself. To find a way to cure his sister of her curse and avenge his family, Tanjiro sets out to become a demon slayer. Though the premise may seem overdone, Demon Slayer is a unique and entertaining experience to enjoy.

There is currently only one season of this monster anime available to stream on Netflix, but you can expect more episodes to come later on. You can also take a look at our list of the best adventure anime on Netflix for more options.

Fullmetal Alchemist

Creator: Hiromu Arakawa
Total Episodes: 51
IMDb Rating: 8.5

Even if you don’t watch much anime on Netflix, you’ve likely heard or seen mention of FMA somewhere. This fantastic fantasy series has spawned games, movies, and even alternate versions of the same series. If you’re looking for a wonderful adventure like Avatar, this is it.

The story follows two young brothers named Edward and Alphonse Elric. These two boys survived a traumatic accident where they took Alchemy too far and quite literally lost parts of themselves in the process. Their hunt to regain what they’ve lost leads them into a global war and some of the darker aspects of alchemy as a whole.

You can stream all episodes of both Fullmetal Alchemist and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood on Netflix right now. They are similar, but each slightly different and equally worth watching.
