The Best RPG Movies to Watch Right Now

If you’re a gamer who loves RPGs and streaming movies, then it’s highly likely that Rpg Movies are exactly what you need in your life. While there are quite a few good video game shows to watch online, there are surprisingly few excellent movies in this space.

To help you on your quest to find the best RPG movies available now, I’ve put together a list of some great titles that you can watch in 2021. Whether you love video games or classic role-playing tabletops like Dungeon and Dragons, you’ll likely find a movie here for you.

Free Guy (2021)

Director: Shawn Levy
Main Cast: Ryan Reynolds, Jodie Comer, Taika Waititi, Lil Rel Howery
Runtime: 115 minutes
IMDb: 7.3

Free Guy is the latest video game movie to arrive on the scene, and though it was originally only available in theaters, you can now rent it online. The Story follows an NPC named Guy (Ryan Reynolds) as he lives his life in an online MMORPG shooter. When he meets a real player that unlocks something in his code, he begins to break free of his normal tendencies and achieve real sentience.

While the movie itself has the heart of a romantic comedy, it has something to say about society as a whole and highlights some key problems within the gaming industry. I highly recommend it for anyone who loves Ryan Reynolds, video games, and everything in between.

Ready Player One (2018)

Director: Steven Spielberg
Main Cast: Ty Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, Lena White
Runtime: 140 minutes
IMDb: 7.4

Ready Player One started out as a best-selling book from the LitRPG genre, but it also works great as a video game movie. Set in 2045, the story follows a financially struggling young man named Wade Watts as he navigates both real life and virtual life. He dives into a video game world called The OASIS as often as he can, and his love for the game leads him on a hunt for a hidden grand prize left by the original creator.

If you’re looking for an RPG adventure that highlights a potential dystopian future for humanity, this is a great option for you.

Sword Art Online the Movie: Ordinal Scale (2017)

Director: Tomohiko Ito
Runtime: 119 minutes
IMDb: 7.4

The popular RPG anime series, Sword Art Online, came out with a movie that expands beautifully from the original story. The plot follows Kirito as he uncovers a conspiracy with a new AR game called Ordinal Scale. Unlike the VR systems of the past, Ordinal Scale runs on a system called The Augma that blends reality and game together. It’s an intriguing concept that results in a thrilling anime series.

It’s a great film to watch even if you haven’t watched the original series, but I suggest you watch the show at some point as well.

Role Models (2008)

Director: David Wain
Main Cast: Paul Rudd, Sean William Scott, Elizabeth Banks, Christopher Mintz-Plasse
Runtime: 99 minutes
IMDb: 6.8

Role Models isn’t your typical RPG movie, but due to the fact that LARPing is heavily featured in the film, I feel like it belongs here. The story follows two unlikely friends, Danny and Wheeler as they both end up required to do community service to avoid jail time. They each end up signing up for a role model program and get assigned kids in desperate need of some positive support in their lives. This naturally leads to everyone taking part in multiple epic LARPing battles that make this movie worthy of this list.

If you’re a fan of Paul Rudd, then this is a must-watch regardless of what’s it about.

No Game No Life: Zero (2017)

Director: Atsuko Ishizuka
Runtime: 106 minutes
IMDb: 7.5

No Game, No Life: Zero is based on the novel series of the same name. The story of humanity’s struggle is highlighted by an epic war. Despite being the only race without magic, humans are forced to use the true power of intellect to survive in a world that demands it.

This anime movie is actually a prequel to No Game, No Life the series, which is available on Netflix right now. If you’re looking for a list of more anime movies on Netflix, we’ve found those too.

Warcraft (2016)

Director: Duncan Jones
Main Cast: Travis Fimmel, Paula Patton, Ben Foster, Dominic Cooper
Runtime: 123 minutes
IMDb: 6.8

World of Warcraft is one of the most beloved MMORPGs of all time, so it’s no surprise the live-action movie deserves to be on this list. The story follows the war between orcs and humans as the Orc horde uses a magic portal to invade the planet of Azeroth. As the larger war rages, a smaller group of humans and orcs work to put a stop to the war by working to stop the true evil behind it.

All-in-all, this isn’t one of the best video game movies I’ve seen, but the CGI and references to the game make it a fun fantasy film worth watching.
