To help guide you on your journey into the macabre, we’ve gathered a list of the best horror series on Netflix in 2021.

Penny Dreadful

Main Cast: Josh Hartnett, Timothy Dalton, Eva Green
Total Episodes
: 27

Penny Dreadful is dive into Victorian era horror with a good balance of action and drama. It features a team of unique characters that specialize in hunting down a variety of supernatural monsters.

The story starts out through the eyes of Ethan Chandler, an American sharpshooter who thinks he’s simply taking on a quest to locate a missing daughter. Little does he know that he is walking straight into a vampire den and will find himself facing many more monsters like this both inside and outside his team.

All-in-all, if you enjoy shows like The Witcher, this is a great one for you.

Parasyte: The Maxim

Creator: Hitoshi Iwaaki
Total Episodes: 24
IMDb Rating: 8.4

Parasyte is… unexpected. It’s hard to fully describe the plot of this horror anime series, but the image says enough about the oddities to get you started. But be warned, this is not a good horror anime to watch if the idea of human parasites disturbs you.

The story follows a 17-year-old Shinichi Izumi who is partially infected by an alien Parasyte. He finds he must learn how to coexist with this creature to survive a world he didn’t realize he understood. The Parasytes that managed to fully take over their human hosts pose an immense threat to both him and the rest of humanity.

You can currently stream all episodes of the first season on Netflix, but it doesn’t look likely we’ll see a season 2.

The Haunting of Bly Manor

Main Cast: Victoria Pedretti, Oliver Jackson, Amelia Eve, T’Nia Miller
Total Episodes: 9
IMDb: 7.4

With the popularity of The Haunting of Hill House, Netflix released this as a follow up with a new story, setting, and characters. As somewhat of a gothic horror romance, it’s a unique series that will hold your attention.

The plot follows a young woman who is hired to oversee two young children in an out-of-the-way manor. Naturally, nothing is as it seems at Bly Manor and terror finds a way to seep into the crevices. The overall story is more spooky than terrifying, but still worth your time if you love a good ghost story.

Death Note

Creators: Tsugumi Ohba, Takeshi Obata
Total Episodes: 37
IMDb Rating: 9.0

Death Note is the kind of thriller anime that turns people who hate the genre into people looking for more — it’s that good. And as a horror, it offers a unique mix of death and psychological thrills.

The plot follows an intelligent, yet cynical high school student who suddenly finds himself in possession of a magical notebook that can kill anyone. All he has to do is write in their name. With such power, he attempts to cleanse the world of evil by taking out those who have committed atrocities. Is it true that absolute power corrupts?

Castlevania

Creator: Warren Ellis
Total Episodes: 32
IMDb: 8.2

This Netflix Original Series is based on Castlevania: Dracula’s Curse, the 3rd installment of the video game saga. It’s gory, visceral, and action-packed the whole way through.

With loads of mystery, vampires, and witty one-liners, Castlevania is a must-watch whether you’re a fan of the games or not. You should watch it for Trevor Belmont alone.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

Main Cast: Kiernan Shipka, Ross Lynch, Lucy Davis, Chance Perdomo
Total Episodes: 36
IMDb: 7.5

This series is a unique spin on the original 90s show Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Unlike the original, this version gets very dark very fast.

The story follows a young Sabrina as she comes of age and into her full witch powers. As a half-human, she straddles the line between the mortal and demonic worlds as best she can. With a surprising amount of blood, demons, and death, it’s a much more gory series than you’d expect.

You

Main Cast: Penn Badgley, Victoria Pedretti, Ambyr Childers, Elizabeth Lail
Total Episodes: 30
IMDb: 7.7

This Netflix original series is more of a psychological thriller than a straight horror show, but it will get in your head and stay there.

The story plays out through the mind of Joe, a seemingly normal young man with some uncomfortably obsessive tendencies. Working at a book store, he lives a fairly off-the-grid life free of social media and the hustle and bustle of everyday life. But when he meets a girl that sparks something in him, he makes her the center of his world and clears out all obstacles around them in the name of love.
