Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs was actually a childhood story for more than a few Millenials, but the movie adaption really only borrowed the concept before running away with it.

The plot follows a young scientist named Flint Lockwood, who has so far had quite the illustrious career of failed experiments. It isn’t until he invents a machine that can make food fall from the sky like rain that he becomes a local sensation. Of course, it is a Flint Lockwood invention, so things never go quite to plan.

With a great cast and endless animated food, this is a great place to start your animated movie journey on Netflix. You can also watch Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 streaming on the platform right now.

It may seem a bit odd to be featuring a Christmas movie here when it isn’t anywhere close to the season, but Klaus is just that good. This Netflix original animated film hits all the right notes and is great for the whole family.

The story follows a lazy postman named Jesper who is sent off to an arctic frozen wasteland. The town he’s stationed in is filled with hate as an age-old feud rages on in the cold, dark snow. But when Jesper befriends a toymaker named Klaus in an effort to cook up a scheme to get the townsfolk to send more letters, things begin to change. The ice on the hearts of the town’s citizens begins to melt.

The Lorax (2012)

Directors: Chris Renaud, Kyle Balda

IMDb: 6.4

If you’re a fan of the classic Dr. Seus books, then The Lorax is the perfect animated movie for you. With recognizable characters and a star-studded voice cast, it’s a great addition to the Netflix library.

The story follows a 12-year-old boy who is just trying to figure out how to win the affection of a girl. His quest takes him somewhere he didn’t expect, discovering the story of the Lorax. This grumpy yet likable creature’s main goal in life is protect the environment he lives in and keep it safe from those who seek to destroy it.

The Land Before Time (1988)

Director: Don Bluth
Main Cast: Pat Hingle, Gabriel Damon, Judith Barsi

What more can really be said about this classic children’s movie? It has dinosaurs, friendship, and surprisingly — a message on dealing with the death of loved one.

The story follows a young “longneck” who becomes orphaned during a tough migration through an everchanging land. This young dinosaur teams up with a variety of other non-carnivorous species who have become separated from their families as they work together to reunite with the rest of the pack.

There a lot more Land Before Time movies that have come out since the original, but nothing can really compare to the first.

The Croods (2013)

Directors: Kirk DeMicco, Chris Sanders
Main Cast: Nicolas Cage, Ryan Reynolds, Emma Stone
Rotten Tomatoes: 72%
IMDb: 7.2

DreamWorks does a great job of creating unique family movies that everyone can enjoy, and The Croods is no exception.

Meant as an animated look into a past world, The Croods is about a caveman family who is forced to overcome their fear of change and trek through an unfamiliar world. With a great voice cast, beautiful animation, and witty dialogue, it’s an all-around solid film.

Netflix has also teamed up with DreamWorks to create 4 seasons of Dawn of the Croods, a children’s cartoon spinoff that expand off the original movie.

ParaNorman (2012)

Directors: Chris Butler, Sam Fell
Main Cast: Kodi Smit-McPhee, Anna Kendrick, Christopher Mintz-Plasse
Rotten Tomatoes: 89%
IMDb: 7.0

Claymation isn’t for everyone, but Laika studios does an excellent job of creating stop-motion animated films that everyone can enjoy.

The story follows a young boy who’s just trying to find his place in the world. When an opportunity arises to take his unique interest and use them to save the town from ghosts and zombies, he seizes the opportunity. ParaNorman is a good adventure comedy that will hold your attention throughout the entire film.
