In 1993, Roger Ebert published a piece titled “The Innocence of Martin Scorsese.” The greatest living film director was once a young boy named Marty who I met in 1967 when he had just graduated from New York University, he says in the opening statement. He is now Martin Scorsese, the director that other directors would perhaps rank higher than themselves. Scorsese’s films have captivated me as well; I started following his career after watching “Taxi Driver” on television. I was enthralled when I learned that Scorsese had bought the book rights to David Grann’s book Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI in July 2017 and Leonardo DiCaprio had agreed to star. Although I learned about Native American history while attending high school in western Nebraska, surrounded by tumbleweed grasslands and the Legacy Plains Museum on Old Oregon Trail Road, I never received any instruction on the killings of Osage Nation members in Oklahoma. I started reading Grann’s thoroughly researched book in the spring of 2019 and was immediately filled with dread and rage. Why aren’t these targeted atrocities covered in history classrooms when they happen so frequently? After the film’s screening, I hope that people will start talking about the quiet Reign of Terror against the Osage Nation in our country. An overview of the Reign of Terror, which took place in the early 1900s: On a sizable piece of land in Oklahoma, the Osage Nation was relocated. Unexpectedly, the tribe received millions of dollars from the oil boom that began in 1920. The country was rich in minerals and oil. Congress established a statute in 1921 mandating court-appointed guardians for every Osage person, including minors, in an effort to have a piece of the action. The guardians started the murders and corruption by seizing the Osage people’s headrights, which guaranteed the guardian would receive their wealth upon death. Shannon Shaw Duty, the editor of the Osage News and a member of The Osage Nation, contributed her thoughts to this story. She penned articles on Grann’s book and the Oklahoma filming; she, her husband, and her three kids all appeared as extras. During the Reign of Terror in 1923, Jim Gray, a great-grandfather of Henry Roan, was cruelly shot and died. Jim Gray was a former Osage Chief (2010–2020). He provided a ton of insight on the subject.

When I asked Gray if he had discussed the movie with Martin Scorsese, he said, “Yes, the filmmakers did get in touch with me, and I visited with him. A segment of the Osage village where the killings occurred, the Gray Horse village, had descendants who were worried about how they would be portrayed in the film. About 200 people attended a traditional Native American Indian feast, which the filmmakers were asked to join alongside the families’ ancestors. Additionally, it provided a chance to discuss ideas that weren’t in the book but were still beneficial for Scorsese to use. But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this Killers Of The Flower Moon quiz. In our 40-minute zoom session, he mentioned high-profile Hollywood films with Native American themes, like “Little Big Man,” “Dances with Wolves,” and “The Last of the Mohicans.” Then Gray started repeating what he had stated to the group: “Yes, all of them are successful Hollywood movies, but they all share three characteristics that I hope you [Scorsese] attempt to avoid. All three of these movies required a white hero, were written by non-Indians, and are all works of fiction. You should try to steer clear of these pitfalls in your movie. Given that his book is non-fiction, David Grann has granted you permission to do that with it. It’s nonfiction. Real individuals are present. In this room are their descendants. Most essential, allow us to assist you. Sir, we do not want you to fail. We want you to create the movie that, in the future, the entire globe will point to and say, “That’s the one they got right.” Please allow us to assist you, I beg you. “My words were met with a tremendous response from the audience,” Gray added after pausing. Scorsese stepped up from his chair and shook my hand right away. Gray’s earnestness was evident in his face and misty eyes when he had finished telling me the story. Of the Osage Nation, of which he served as chief for ten years, he did indeed speak. But one must also keep in mind that he is a direct descendant of a murder victim—his great-grandfather, Henry Roan. I’ll never forget his gripping and moving account of that evening. William Belleau portrays Osage rancher Henry Roan in the movie. Roan had a close relationship with the Burkharts. Ernest Burkhart is played by Leonardo DiCaprio. It should be recalled that DiCaprio was originally intended to play FBI Agent Tom White. It was revealed in 2021 that he would take on the role of the troubled Ernest Burkhart, who would be the spouse of Mollie, the Osage woman played by Lily Gladstone and the nephew of Tom Hale, the domineering rancher represented by Robert De Niro.

When I questioned Gray about the choice of William for the role of his great grandfather, he responded, “William is perfectly cast, as after spending some time with him and hearing similar family stories about the tough times of forced boarding schools, as my great grandfather endured, who, I believe never recovered from the experience.” Also, you will find out which character are you in this Killers Of The Flower Moon quiz. The movie was placed on hold while Scorsese worked on “The Irishman” and Leonardo DiCaprio finished “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” by Quentin Tarantino. As the initial film meetings got underway at The Osage Nation Reservation in Pawhuska, Oklahoma, in the spring of 2019, I started reading the book. Additionally, Gray believes that Covid’s suspension of the majority of film productions in 2020 provided the producers time to revise the script. In Oklahoma, filming started in April 2021. Many of those days, Martin Scorsese was on location donning a cowboy hat, and his cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto was by his side. We always had fun working additional hours on site, according to Shannon Shaw Duty. The opportunity of a lifetime was in a large machine. Hope the movie is as enjoyable to watch as it was to film. Everyone I spoke with for the movie indicated they were always given the highest respect and consideration. One is of Indigenous descent, and I have two friends who live in Oklahoma who were hired as extras for the movie. They are both eagerly anticipating the movie’s release, which has yet to be determined.

About the quiz

I advise reading the David Grann book that served as the basis for “Killers of the Flower Moon,” watching the CNN “This is Life” series, “Osage: Reign of Terror,” on Apple TV, and reading the Osage News online at OsageNews.org by editor Shannon Shaw Duty. Also, you must try to play this Killers Of The Flower Moon quiz. After monitoring the development of the movie for over six years, I am confident that Scorsese will change the course of history by bringing this Osage narrative to light. As horrifying as it is, I’m hoping the experience will be comparable to seeing Steven Spielberg’s “Schindler’s List,” which I watched in Oakbrook, Illinois, with my oldest son the week it was released. Audience members were inconsolable as they left the theater and were hushed. Nevertheless, they were aware that they had just watched a superb movie that was both historically accurate and sympathetic to human suffering. Read Ben Kenigsberg’s review of the movie from Cannes 2023 and Chaz Ebert’s essay combining Roger’s reviews of Martin Scorsese’s films for more information.
