Oedipus’ daughters Antigone and Ismene talk about the catastrophe that just struck them. In a struggle for dominance of Thebes, their brothers Polynices and Eteocles had killed one another. Having taken control of the city, Creon has ruled that Polynices, who led a foreign army against Thebes, cannot receive a dignified funeral. Creon places sentries above Polynices’ corpse and issues a death threat to anyone who attempts to bury him. Antigone decides to bury their brother properly despite Creon’s decree and without the assistance of her sister Ismene. A worried sentry soon notifies Creon that someone performed Polynices’ funeral rites while the sentries were asleep. Creon claims that he believes some of the city’s dissidents bought off the sentry to carry out the rituals, and he makes a promise to kill the guard if no more suspects are discovered.

The sentry quickly clears his name by spotting Antigone trying to rebury her brother after the sentries had disinterred him. Creon is confronted by Antigone, who readily admits her crime, and she accuses him of disobeying the gods by refusing to bury Polynice. Creon sentences Ismene and Antigone to death. The stage is entered by Antigone’s fiancé and Creon’s son Haemon. He is questioned about it by Creon. Initially appearing to support his father, Haemon eventually declares his disapproval of Creon’s obstinacy and petty vengeance. Before his very eyes, Creon curses him and threatens to kill Antigone. When the blind prophet Tiresias shows himself, Creon makes a commitment to follow his guidance. Creon rejects Tiresias’ advice to permit Polynices to be buried. According to Tiresias, the city would be cursed by the gods. Creon and the inhabitants of Thebes are terrified by Tiresias’ words, and Creon grudgingly proceeds to release Antigone from the tomb where she has been imprisoned. Characters:

Oedipus

Oedipus the King and Oedipus at Colonus’ main character. Before the events of Oedipus the King take place, Oedipus ascends to the throne of Thebes. He is famed for his wit and prowess in solving puzzles; after freeing Thebes from the magical force that had been imprisoning it and solving its mystery, he was crowned king. Oedipus, however, remains obstinately deaf to the truth about himself. The literal meaning of his name, “swollen foot,” is the only hint as to who he is; as a little child, he was removed from the Laius household and abandoned in the mountains with his feet bound. He killed his original father while traveling to Thebes without realizing who he was, then married his mother Jocasta.

Jocasta

Sister of Creon, mother, and wife of Oedipus. Only in the epilogue of Oedipus the King does Jocasta make an appearance. She implores Oedipus not to exile Creon in her opening speech, hoping to bring the two men together. She comforts her husband while reassuringly urging him to disbelieve Tiresias’ dreadful warnings. Jocasta discovers Oedipus’ identity before he does, and in her wish to keep her husband and son from learning it, she demonstrates her love for them.

Antigone

Being the offspring of Oedipus and Jocasta, she is also Oedipus’ sister. At the conclusion of Oedipus the King, Antigone makes a brief appearance as she bids her father farewell as Creon gets ready to exile Oedipus. In Oedipus at Colonus, she makes a longer cameo, taking care of and guiding her elderly, blind father during his exile. But in Antigone, Antigone finds her true self. She portrays a bravery and clarity of vision unmatched by any other character in the three Theban plays as the play’s protagonist. Oedipus, Creon, and Polynices all unwilling to accept the repercussions of their acts, but Antigone is unashamed in her belief that she has done the right thing.
