Amir claims that something that happened to him 26 years ago, when he was still a young boy in Afghanistan, is what made him who he is today. Before the incident, he lives with his father, Baba, in a luxurious house in Kabul, Afghanistan. They employ two Hazara (an ethnic minority) servants named Ali and his son Hassan. Rahim Khan, a close friend of Baba, is also frequently present. Things start to change when Afghanistan’s ruler is removed. Amir and Hassan come upon Assef, Wali, and Kamal when they are playing one day. Hassan uses his slingshot to stop Assef from beating up Amir for hanging out with a Hazara.

Winter, the time of the kite-fighting competition, is skipped over in the narrative. Boys compete to try who can cut the string of the rival kite by covering the string on their kites with pieces of glass. Kite running is the practice of boys chasing after and recovering lost kites. Hassan leaves to run the losing kite after Amir prevails in the competition. When Amir goes in search of him, he discovers Hassan pinned with his pants down at the end of an alley.

Characters:

Amir

the story’s protagonist and narrator. Amir, the sensitive and astute son of a prosperous businessman in Kabul, develops a sense of entitlement as he gets older. He alternates between being a devoted buddy and hitting Hassan out of jealousy whenever Hassan receives attention from Amir’s father. Hassan is his best friend. Amir develops from a budding author to a published novelist thanks to his talent for telling stories. Early in the book, his actions are driven primarily by his intense desire to please his father, which is also the main reason he permits Hassan to be raped. From that moment on, his search for a method to atone for his actions is motivated by his emotions of remorse. In the end, he achieves this by bravery and self-sacrifice, and he relates his narrative as an act of atonement.

Hassan

Amir’s half-brother and greatest buddy, as well as Baba’s servant. Hassan continually demonstrates his loyalty to Amir by standing up for him when he is assaulted and by always being willing to listen. His defining qualities are bravery, selflessness, and intelligence, however, due in large part to his lack of education, his brilliance is more instinctive than scholarly. He experiences racism throughout the entire book as a result of being an ethnic Hazara who lives in poverty and is seen as a lower-class member of Afghan society. Despite not being aware of it, he is Baba’s illegitimate child, and as he grows up, Ali raises him. Although he is absent for a large chunk of the book, his rape serves as an early spark for the plot, and he is crucial to the entire book.

Baba

A wealthy, reputable businessman and the father of Amir and Hassan. Baba strives to instill these virtues in Amir because he feels that doing what is right and thinking for oneself comes first. He also never allows other people’s lack of faith in him to prevent him from achieving his objectives. Despite his mistrust of religious extremism, he upholds his own moral standards, behaves bravely, and acts with confidence. When necessary, he will even put his life in danger to uphold his principles. He nevertheless conceals the fact that Hassan is his son out of guilt over having a child with a Hazara lady. Though he certainly loves Amir, he is somewhat distant from him and is frequently harsh on him because he cannot publicly love Hassan.
