Montreal clubs win the first two NHL games on December 19, 1917. Joe Malone scores five goals for the Canadiens in a 7-4 victory over the Ottawa Senators. Harry Hyland of the Montreal Wanderers scores five goals in his team’s 10-9 victory over the Toronto Arenas.

It was unknown which of the two games began initially for nearly a century. The Senators-Canadiens game had long been scheduled to begin at 8:30 p.m. Nobody knew when the Wanderers-Arenas game started until 2017 when an old newspaper ad with an 8:15 p.m. start time was uncovered.

The National Hockey Association was a previous hockey league that has existed since 1909. However, tensions among the league’s owners were so severe that the league’s operations were halted in 1917, and the NHL was founded. All four NHL teams were in the country.

Frank Calder was the first NHL president, and the league’s first two games were played only 23 days after its establishment.

The Senators were missing defenseman Hamby Shore and winger Jack Darragh for financial reasons when they hit the ice. Shore demanded back compensation, and Darragh was irritated since the new league’s season was 24 games long, while his contract only allowed for 20.

About the quiz

After their rink caught fire, the Wanderers folded.

Between 1920 and 1927, Ottawa won four Stanley Cups, but the team relocated to St. Louis in 1934. Together, Montreal and Toronto have produced 37 Stanley Cup winners.

Eddie Livingstone, the owner of the Toronto Blueshirts, was at the center of the main disagreement. He was an ongoing source of contention among fellow NHA owners and was frequently accused of exploiting loopholes in league regulations to create what some saw as unfair advantages. He particularly enraged owners when he merged his two Toronto teams (the Ontario and the Blueshirts) after the latter had been deprived of its top players. Livingstone occasionally provided non-playing contracts to members of rival clubs and once fought to remove the Montreal Wanderers out of the league after the team sought to entice two of his top Blueshirts players. Livingstone has threatened to launch a competing league in the United States during his fights with owners.

The National Hockey Association had six teams in its final season (1916-17): the Montreal Canadiens, Montreal Wanderers, Ottawa Senators, Quebec Bulldogs, Toronto Blueshirts, and an army squad from the Toronto-based 228th Battalion. On February 11, 1917, the club owners convened in Montreal’s Windsor Hotel to discuss the league’s future, a day after men of the 228th Battalion, the most popular NHA squad, were called into World War I action.
