Why Do Photographers Wear Black?

Why Do Photographers Wear Black?

If you have ever seen a Photographer in action, you will notice that most of them wear black. Black is a professional color that’s timeless and stylish and it tends not to show dirt. But these are not the only reasons many Photographers wear the color.

The biggest reason a photographer wears black is because it doesn’t show reflection. Read on to find out more about why black is the best color for photographers.

Reflecting Light in Photography

If you know a bit about photography, you are probably familiar with the concept of reflection. If a photographer is not getting enough light, they may take a white or silver reflector that bounces light from a source (such as an open window) on to their subject. This creates a nice, diffused light that provides the perfect amount of illumination.

Now say that the photographer is wearing white. The light can bounce off him or her to reflect on the model which may seem convenient. But the light may fall in an undesired place causing harsh shadows that are unflattering.

A bright color may also show up in the subject’s eyes causing a distraction in the image.

While black does produce some reflection, it can easily be taken out in processing. Black components are always easy to edit out. This is not the case if another color falls on to the subject like green, blue, or purple.

Why Else Do Photographers Wear Black?

While eliminating reflection is the main reason a photographer will wear black, it isn’t the only reason. Here are some others to consider.

It’s Not Distracting: A photographer will often run around the set making adjustments and getting different angles. He or she won’t want to distract their subject from their pose. This is one reason why wearing black is a good idea.

It Doesn’t Show Dirt: Photographers often have to kneel on the floor and get close to the ground. They may get dirty, but black won’t easily show stains.

It Looks Professional: Black will look professional in a variety of situations. It will work If you are shooting outdoors, if you are shooting a wedding, if you are visiting a company for a product shoot and more.

Do Photographers Always Have to Wear Black?

Black is the best color choice for photographers, but it’s understandable that you may want to change things up a little. If this is the case, you will be best off sticking to dark muted tones that won’t produce a reflection. You should also stay away from fabrics that are shiny for obvious reasons.

Now that you know why photographers wear black, you can pick out a wardrobe that is best for your hobby or profession. Good luck stocking up for the coming season!
