Kinetic Photography and How to Achieve the Effect

Kinetic Photography and How to Achieve the Effect

Kinetic photography is great for photographers who want to get experimental with their craft. It involves utilizing movement that comes from physics to get your shots. You will hold your Camera, but you will allow it to respond to forces to capture images.

If that sounds interesting to you, read on to find out more.

How is Kinetic Photography Achieved?

Kinetic photography involves allowing the camera to move in unconventional ways while shooting. You may shake your camera’s strap while shooting, you may let the camera fall off objects, toss it into the air or move it around while you shoot.

Of course, this begs the question, how can you keep your camera safe during a kinetic photography shoot? Here are some tips that will help you achieve your goal.

  • Make sure the camera strap is secure.

  • Adjust the setting to ensure that exposure will stay set and your shutter will stay open for the shot.

  • Hold the camera strap firmly and click your shutter. Then swing, shake, toss, or twirl your camera. There are no rules when it comes to how you move it.

  • If you feel your camera may get damaged when you move it around in this way, you can also place it on a tripod and move the tripod to achieve the effect.

  • You can also try extreme kinetic photography which involves tossing the camera in the air, so it becomes airborne. This must be done with a strapless camera and the photographer should have good hand-eye coordination. You should also throw the camera in a way that will achieve optimal results instead of trying to toss it as high as you possibly ca

Additional Tips

Here are some additional tips that will help your kinetic photos come out great.

Use the Right Lighting: Kinetic photography tends to work best in darker atmospheres. However, you may want to experiment to determine what types of lights provide optimal effects. It’s recommended to start with one light source. Then add lights as desired and move them around to get different results.

Use an Inexpensive Camera: For obvious reasons, you will want to start out with a cheaper camera that you don’t mind getting damaged. Kinetic effects are easy to produce so even an inexpensive camera can get great results. Once you get used to the process, you may want to move on to using a more expensive camera.

Prepare a Soft Landing Spot: Figure out where your camera is going to land and make sure it’s well cushioned. You can have it land on a bed or couch or you can put pillows on the floor to soften the blow.

Be Patient: It may take a few tries before you get the results you are hoping for. Keep at it and you will get there eventually.

Kinetic photography may sound crazy and it’s not for every photographer. But it just may get you the stunning photos you are hoping for. How will you be using it to take your pictures to the next level?
