What is Bracketing and How Can I Use it to Improve My Photography?

There are a variety of techniques you can use to make your photos unique. Bracketing is an effect that is being popularly used in modern times.

If you’re not sure what bracketing is, read on to find out.

What is Bracketing?

Bracketing involves taking multiple shots of the same image using different camera settings. This provides the photographer with variations of the same subject that they can choose from or combine to get a great shot.

There are various types of bracketing including the following:

  • Depth of Field Bracketing: This type of bracketing creates a variety of photos where different objects are in and out of focus.

  • Focus Bracketing: This technique is ideal when depth of field is limited. It allows you to manually adjust the lens’s focus so you can capture various images with different foci. You can later combine these images into one photo that appears as if it is perfectly in focus. This is known as “focus stacking”.

  • Flash Bracketing: This type of bracketing involves using flash to light different areas of your image. Then you can compare the shots to find out which turned out best.

  • White Balance Bracketing: This involves adjusting the camera’s white balance to get a variety of color palettes.

  • Exposure Bracketing: This is the most common type of bracketing. To achieve the effect, the photographer will play around with settings including aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. This provides more postproduction options.

How to Use Exposure Bracketing

There are various ways to incorporate exposure bracketing in your photography. Here are a few options.

  • Manually Alter Shutter Speed: This is the type of exposure bracketing that is used the most. It requires you to keep the shutter speed and ISO constant while varying the aperture.

  • Manually Alter ISO: The higher your ISO is, the brighter your image will be. However, a high ISO can also make your photos grainy. Most photographers will keep their ISO as low as possible without allowing the picture to get too dark.

  • Automatic Exposure Bracketing: This type of bracketing is offered as a setting on many DSLR cameras and smartphones. It allows the camera to always get three levels of exposure in a single shot. It provides photographers with a variety of shots in a single snap without having to spend a lot of time tweaking settings.

  • Set Shutter Speed Priority: This involves keeping shutter speed constant in accordance with the speed you choose. The aperture will automatically adjust to get the right exposure.

  • Set Aperture Priority: This keeps the aperture set to the setting you choose and automatically adjusts shutter speed to create a variety of long and short exposure shots.

Now that you know more about bracketing, you can get images that stun and amaze. How will you be using this technique to take your photography to the next level?
