Is Photography Writer’s Block a Thing? And How Do I Get Past It?

Nothing inspires a photographer like a bit of traveling. When you are exposed to a new environment, it seems like everything is picture worthy.

But when you’re stuck at home seeing the same old, same old day in and day out, it can be hard to find good material. You may suffer with what can best be described as a photographer’s version of writer’s block.

Well, let us assure you that there are ways to become inspired, even in your hometown. Read on to find out how you can get that spark back.

Try Taking a Walk Without Your Camera

As a photographer, you’re probably used to taking a camera with you wherever you go. The problem is, when you’re so focused on taking pictures, you may miss out on some great scenery.

Ty going out without a camera for a change. This may open you up to some new ideas. Then go back with your camera and capture those special scenes.

Browse Other Photographer’s Work

No one likes to be a copycat but browsing the work of other photographers may give you some creative direction. Try looking online and in Photography museums. Remember, no two pictures can be exactly alike so whatever images you end up taking are bound to have your signature style.

Try Something New

You can also become inspired by trying something new. If you mainly do nature scenes, try a street scene. If you’re used to taking traditional pictures, try something avant garde by doing a macro or exploring shadows.

Even switching from color to black and white can put you in a different mindset.

Learn a New Skill

When it comes to photography, there seems to be no end to the techniques you can learn. High speed photography, tilt photography, infrared photography and night photography are just some you can choose from.

Once you start gaining the skills you need to achieve these techniques, you will want to try them out on everything, and all your subject matter will seem new again.

Sign up for a Photography Challenge

Often a photography challenge will provide you with a prompt that will require you to take a certain kind of picture. It may be specific to the subject of the photograph or it may be specific to a technique that must be used. Either way, it’s likely to take you outside your box and give you some inspiration.

And if you end up winning the challenge, you may just get a cash prize and/or some recognition.

Get New Gear

New gear will also help you get different kind of shots that will make photography new and fresh again. A new filter will allow you to experiment with exposure. A diffuser for your flash can change the way your photos come out. Decide what gear you would most enjoy and save up to add it to your collection.

Travel

If seeing the same old scenery is making your bored, get out of town! You don’t have to travel to an exotic location, just get out of the city, or even the neighborhood. You are likely to get some shots that will help you get your mojo back.

Every photography deals with periods when it’s hard to get those wheels turning. The tips in this article are sure to get you back in business so you can start creating again. What do you do for inspiration?
