Don’t Plan a Full-Course Meal

You don’t need a big meal at a Super Bowl party, so don’t try to organize your Super Bowl food by appetizers, main courses, desserts and snacks. The Super Bowl typically lasts around three to four hours. You and your guests will likely spend all of that time grazing away at your buffet spread. So, plan to offer all of your food at once. That way, guests can eat at their own pace.

Make Sure You Offer a Wide Variety of Options

You’ll want to be sure that your Super Bowl appetizer spread includes a good variety of items. Plan for a mix of savory, spicy, salty and sweet items, as well as a variety of lighter and heavier items. You don’t want a table filled with cheese-heavy dishes or a platter of only meat-heavy dishes. With a wide array of flavors, textures and ingredients, there will be something for everyone. Plus, it will help to ensure that your guests don’t experience snack fatigue too early in the night.

Keep Your Guests’ Preferences in Mind

If you know your guest list and you are aware that your guests are more on the casual side, don’t try to be too fancy with ingredients that they may not be familiar with. Opt for items you know they’ll love instead. Similarly, if you’re hosting a group that you know would prefer items with a healthier approach, make sure you have appropriate options for those guests as well.

You also want to keep any dietary needs in mind. Beyond vegetarian and vegan diets, which we mentioned above, also make note of whether or not your guests have food allergies or certain sensitivities that would require them to take precautions. For example, if you have a guest with a serious peanut allergy, you’ll want to avoid using peanuts in any of your dishes to be on the safe side.

Prioritize Portable Snacks 

It’s just a fact that, at a Super Bowl party, your guests will be eating in front of the television, on your couch, over your carpet. So try to go for portable, mess-free options. While, sure, chili is a game day favorite, do you really want that bowl of tomato-based soup to go flying during the next touchdown, only to land upside down on your white rug? Probably not.

So, look for items that hold together well. After all, the fewer the crumbs, the better. It’s even better if the food you offer can be eaten with one hand while people hold their plates in their other hand. By no means should your guests have to attempt to use forks and knives while balancing a plate on their knees.

Don’t Forget the Beverages

In addition to all of the snacks and apps on offer, make sure to have plenty of beverages for your guests as well. Just as you want to keep guests’ preferences in mind when planning your food menu, you also want to keep their preferences in mind when picking out drinks.

Make Sure You Have Enough Food

Nothing is more disappointing than running out of snacks by halftime. Plan accordingly to ensure that you have enough food to feed all of your guests. The rule of thumb for parties wherein you’ll just be serving appetizers and finger foods like those above? Estimate that each guest will eat up to 8 appetizer or snack bites per hour. 

So, let’s say that you have 10 people at the party, including yourself, and the Super Bowl is four hours long. You’re going to need roughly 320 “bites.” While that seems like a lot, it’s really not. If a recipe makes 24 “bites” — whether that’s 24 little pinwheels or 24 little pigs in a blanket or 24 wings, whatever — then you only need to make about 13 items. 

Still seem like too much work? That’s where the potluck method comes in handy. Ask six of those party guests to bring an item, and you’ll cut your workload (and grocery list … and snack budget) in half.

Make sure to plan for enough drinks as well. The rule of thumb is to plan to provide two alcoholic beverages per guest during the party’s first hour, then one beverage per guest during each hour after that. So, for your party of 10 that lasts four hours, you’d need to provide 50 drinks. That means buying either 50 beers, three to four bottles of liquor, or 10 bottles of wine, or a combination of all of the above that adds up to 50 drinks. 

Set Your Budget Ahead of Time and Stick To It

As you could probably guess based on the above calculations on how much food you need, hosting a Super Bowl party can become expensive very quickly. Before you even make your guest list, decide how much you can feasibly spend on your Super Bowl party and then plan accordingly.

Looking for ways you can cut back on your spending when planning for the party? Opt for more affordable food and drink options. Maybe instead of shrimp skewers and hot wing recipes, you serve more fried veggies and big batches of spinach artichoke dip or nachos. Maybe you opt to buy more beer than wine. 

Don’t be afraid to ask your guests for help, either. Most guests will be happy to pitch in and bring something to a potluck-style party. You can also ask guests to BYOB. This will help cut down your drink costs in a major way. 

Additionally, don’t waste money that you could spend on food, on things that no one needs or will really remember next year. While someone might ask for your awesome meatball recipe next Super Bowl, they likely won’t ask you where you bought your party decorations. 

You can also save cash by opting out of stocking up on disposable cups, silverware and dishes, and using your real stuff instead. 

Don’t Make It Stressful

And last but not least, don’t make things stressful. Your Super Bowl party should be fun, not something you regret hosting. Don’t take on more than you can handle. Instead, offer food both you and your guests will love, and stick to a reasonable budget. You’ll be glad you didn’t overdo it when you’re able to kick back, relax and enjoy the game with your pals, versus fretting over appetizers and how much money you spent on snacks.
