An Interview with Rockie Brown

We spoke with indie pop/rap artist Rockie Brown about her inspiration, her latest single ‘Party’s Over’ and what’s to come. Read the full interview below.

How long have you been making music and how would you describe your style?
I’ve been writing songs since high school, but really started taking it seriously after college. I would say a solid 12 years. Currently, I’m focused on message-driven music. Indie pop/rap is a generic label I’ve heard. I’d love to hear your take. 🙂

What’s your biggest inspiration as an artist?
Right now, current affairs. I’ve lived different phases of artistry. There were moments when all I wrote was pain from a breakup. Another, writing pop bangers. I’m at a point now where I want to talk about real issues. I wanna make people think. We’re living in a crazy time. People are angry, scared and unsettled. At times, so am I. I’m using my truths as a weapon.

What’s the background of your latest track ‘Party’s Over’?
What do you hope people take away from the track?I wrote Party’s Over after certain states wanted to pass laws sentencing women to death for having an abortion. The idea of this is insane. The hypocrisy behind it is sickening. I remember just crying from being enraged. You can hear it in the song. The words came out so effortlessly and quickly. Some songs take longer to write. I was definitely in the zone on this one. I just want people to listen and open their minds. Put yourself in someone else’s shoes. Nothing is black and white. There is a lot of grey.

How did the track name come about?
Originally I wanted to call it “War Against Women” but Party’s Over is the hook in the song. It was a no brainer. As direct as the lyrics are, Party’s Over seemed a little less intimidating, giving the listener something to be curious about. And although I initially wrote it for women, it’s also for anyone who has felt oppressed and unequal.

What do you have planned creatively for the rest of 2020?
The rest of 2020? Let’s hope we get a second shot at 2020. What a crazy year. More writing, recording, videos and live performances! (Holy shit is there a lot to write about!)
