It’s something I’ve always wanted to achieve, but I never thought it was possible as a gay man.

Former “Bachelor” Colton Underwood has been pursuing fatherhood for over two years, a journey he has documented through his podcast, aptly named “Daddyhood.” He and his husband, Jordan C. Brown, recently announced on Instagram that they are expecting a baby boy in the fall.

The joyous announcement came with a heartfelt caption from Underwood: “Our little boy is coming this fall ,” accompanying a photo carousel that included an ultrasound image. Underwood also shared a video expressing his excitement and happiness about the upcoming addition to their family.

During a backstage interview at TODAY earlier this year, Underwood shared that becoming a father has always been a significant goal for him. “It’s something I’ve always wanted to achieve, but I never thought it was possible as a gay man,” he said.

The road to parenthood has not been without its challenges for Underwood. He was initially told that his active sperm count was low, prompting him to work closely with doctors to develop a plan that included adjustments to his lifestyle, diet, and workout routines. Brown, although not facing the same issue, adopted the same changes to support his husband.

Once Underwood’s sperm count improved, the couple began their search for a surrogate. Their focus was not on physical attributes but on finding someone with the right personality traits. Underwood explained to Men’s Health, “We want somebody deep and cool. I believe in nature versus nurture. So give us the basics and we can show this kid love.”

In a serendipitous twist, Underwood met their egg donor during a routine physical. They shared an elevator ride without knowing each other’s identities. This coincidence felt like a sign to Underwood that they were on the right path.

The couple divided their sperm between the surrogate’s 22 eggs, resulting in the fertilization of three embryos. They chose to transfer the embryo that was deemed the healthiest by their doctors. The couple does not know whose sperm was used, but they plan to repeat the process with the other partner for their second child.

Their son is expected to arrive in October. In the meantime, Underwood and Brown are honing their parenting skills with their two dogs, a German Shepherd and an Australian Shepherd/Border Collie mix.

Underwood described his parenting style as “cool and casual and calm” in a February 2024 interview with TODAY.com. He noted that Brown often has to take on the role of disciplinarian, joking that he needs to start disciplining the dogs to prevent them from resenting Brown.

With their son’s arrival on the horizon, Underwood and Brown are eagerly anticipating the next chapter in their lives as they prepare to welcome their baby boy into their family.
