The timeless traditional rituals of South Indian wedding – Part 2

Groom Arrival and Varapoja

BHEEGARA MANE –GROOM’S SPECIAL ROOM
  • This is the room that is decorated to welcome the Groom and his family.
  • The room entrance is decorated with thorna and fresh flowers and garlands.
  • Tables  are laid out and draped  elegantly with cloth and
  • Centrally the photo of the family deity of the groom’s party is placed.
  • The necessary puja items like Deepa, Arashina kumkuma bowls, Ghante(bell) and Arathi plate are kept in front of the photo.
  • A decorative bindige(vessel) is filled  with water and
  • Normally the steel and kitchenware are displayed artistically on the table.
  • A basket of fruits and vegetables are also kept.
  • Towels and toiletries are neatly stacked.
  • Savouries like puri unde, chakli, gopura of groundnut/hurgadle and sweets are decoratively arranged on trays
  • Concept-based doll sets with placards are arranged to add to the beauty of the
  • The groom’s family is  welcomed into the  room by the  bride’s parents and
  • Puja is done to the family deity.
  • They are requested to freshen up and are invited by the bride’s side for a light brunch.

WELCOMING THE  GROOM-SHOWERING WITH FLOWERS
  • This is  essentially welcoming the groom’s party to the  Wedding hall (Also referred to as Edaragolladu)
  • Based on interest and customs, different styles of bringing the Groom can be arranged.
  • Baraath with Band set(Groom sitting on Horse)
  • Punjabi Dol,
  • Dance Troop with latest Hit songs and Dance
  • Antique decorated car
  • Traditional Nadaswaram
  • All males wearing Turbans like north Indians to welcome the groom
  • The bride’ s parents welcome the Groom with a decorative coconut and garland
  • Also, the groom’s parents and other relatives are welcomed with garlands.
  • Arathi is performed by the ladies and a dhrishti coconut (Eedagayi) is broken to remove obstacles.
  • A mix of aralu and coloured balls are thrown on the groom’s party to add colour to the
  • The father of the bride ushers in the groom to a Welcome path decorated with flowers.
  • Sometimes a lamp is lit and the groom’s  side make their way in treading on the lovely path of flowers

VARAPOOJA – SHOWERING OF GIFTS TO THE COUPLE
  • This is a function where both groom and bride are invited to the stage separately and gifts are showered.
  • A dash of colours is added to the festivities by a  varied display of items.
  • The groom is offered a new set of attire which he wears and comes to the
  • The following items are generally given to the  groom
  • Decorative dry coconut normally 5 pieces exquisitely carved.
  • Dry coconut halves normally 10 pieces.
  • Sugar moulds (Sakre acchu) in different shapes.
  • Dryfruits arranged in decorative containers.
  • Fruit basket
  • Sweets and savouries like Chakli, Thengolu, Mucchore, Puri unde, Groundnut and  Hurgadle gopuras are arranged in trays and
  • Makeup items are displayed on a tray.
  • Jewels like Chain, Ring, watch are displayed.
  • Concept-based Doll sets give that extra zing to the
  • Innovative stuff made from sweets and chocolates is also displayed.
  • The bride’s father garlands  the  groom and offers  all these items to him
  • Similarly, the bride is  gifted with  a  saree by her mother in law and  she dons  the  stage with that
  • The items generally given to the bride  are
  • Arashina and kumkuma in  a decorative  container
  • 5 jaggery moulds innovatively decorated and arranged on a tray filled with Hurkadle.
  • 5 decorated coconuts
  • Decorated dry coconut in various
  • Sugar moulds (Sakre acchu) arranged in a tray.
  • Fruit platter
  • Dryfruits arranged in unique containers.
  • Sweets and savouries like Puri unde, Chakli,
  • Jewellery sets are displayed
  • Makeup items are arranged on a tray.
  • Concept-based doll sets add to the  beauty of the
  • The groom’s mother garlands  the bride and gives  all these items  to the
  • The guests are given Cobri mitai or Cobri Sakre.
  • The ladies are given arashina kumkuma, flowers and fancy decorated haldi kumkum packets.
  • The dinner area is decorated with flowers, rangoli and
  • On request, Rukhoth is arranged for Son and mother to have dinner together with sisters
  • The groom’s party are made to sit in this decorated area and served dinner.
