Why the Sacagawea dollar is valuable
In 2000, the US Mint issued the Sacagawea Dollar. This coin honors Sacagawea who was a 15-year-old Shoshone Indian American girl. She helped lead Lewis and Clark in their famous expedition through what would become the United States. A dollar coin commemorating the 200th anniversary, from 1804-1806, was released.
Even a 2001 Sacagawea Dollar that has been circulated is worth at least $1.05.

2000P Sacagawea dollar and Statehood quarter Mule
A “mule”, in coin collecting, is a coin with two different designs on it. One side has Washington’s face and the design of a quarter while the other features the back of the Sacagawea Dollar with the soaring Eagle design. Only 18 examples are known, and only one was sold at an auction for $144,000 in 2022.
2014-D Sacagawea dollar and Presidential Dollar Mule
A mule with an American presidential dollar is another super-valuable Sacagawea Dollar coin. This coin, which was found in a bag with dollar coins in a bank in 2019, sold for $84,000 at auction in 2021.
2000 D Sacagawea Dollars and South Carolina Quarter Mule
Another exciting Sacagawea Dollar coin error, this time at the Denver Mint, in 2000, when the front and back of the coin were paired together. This coin was not discovered for over 20 years. It was sold in 2022, for $66,000. The only known example.

Mule coins are rare because they are the only coinage errors that result from human error. While some mule dollars were intentionally made, most of them, such as the Sacagawea dollar-coin mules which have a high value, were just regular mistakes.
