What Is An Outie Vagina? FYI, It Is Super Common

All of us compare ourselves to other people. It can be hard to know what is “normal” when it comes to our sexual organs. Our base of comparison is often limited by what we see in porn and other perfect representations of our bodies. Some people worry about their outie and fear it might be abnormal. We want to assure you that an outie is perfectly normal.

What’s an outie vaginal?

This happens when the Labia minora, the inner vaginal lip, extends beyond the labia majora (the outside vaginal lip). Although this vaginal appearance isn’t often depicted in art, pornography or art, it is perfectly normal.

We use the term vagina because it is commonly used to describe the outer genitals. The vagina refers to the internal organ parts. The “vulva” is the collective name for the parts that you can see from the outside. However, throughout this article, we will use the terms vulva or vagina interchangeably.

This article will tell you everything you need to know about vulva appearance and “outie vagina”.

What is the most common outie vaginal?

Vulvas can look just like any other part of the body. The labia minora is often longer than the majora, which can lead to the “outie vulgina” look.

You know the expression, “No two snowflakes look exactly alike,” right? The expression could also refer to the vulva,” Dr Sherry Ross, a women’s health expert who is the author of She-ology, tells O.school. “There’s no right or wrong way for the vulva, so there is no perfect one.”

Ross claims that half of her patients are worried about their vulvas. This is particularly true for those with labia minora, which extend beyond the labia maina. Ross stressed that this is a normal and healthy appearance of the vulva.

What are we talking now about?

People with vulvas may have seen only a few vulvas outside of their own. Although it is easy to find many vulvas online today, that doesn’t necessarily mean they are all the same.

“Many young people are getting information through the internet, where many are viewing sexually explicit sites that may promote unrealistic expectations about the range of normal anatomy such as prepubertal anatomies,” Dr Deborah Birenbaum tells O.school.

As with other media representations of body shapes, porn and online sources do not include genital types and shapes. Birenbaum suggests that anyone who wants to see an array of normal vulva appearances should check these resources.

  • Great Wall of Vagina Plaster casts of over 400 vulvas
  • The Labia Library Anatomy and Photo Gallery, curated by Women’s Health Victoria in Australia
  • The New View Campaign – Non-medicalized information about a variety of normal sexual expressions

Understanding your vulva is important.

It is essential to feel confident about your genitalia to understand, care for and enjoy your body. Birenbaum states that if a person is concerned about their genital appearance it can affect their sexual health and self-esteem. Talking to a trusted doctor if you are concerned about your anatomy might be helpful.

Birenbaum states that “in my job as a Gynecologist, [I help] to educate [people] about variations of normal anatomy & appropriate terminology so they can feel comfortable in themselves,” Birenbaum said.

It is possible to understand that your vulva appearance is normal and have honest conversations with your partner about it if you wish. Ross says it also helps you to take control of your health.

You need to love and get to know every part of this amazing area of your body. She said that it is important to know what is normal so you can recognize when there is a problem or if something isn’t right.

Is an outie’s vagina harmful?

Ross says that it is uncommon, but sometimes longer labia can cause discomfort or pain. This condition is labial Hypertrophy.

Ross states that “most people can’t deny that something isn’t quite right.” Ross says that the most common sign is the need for women to fold their labia up and push it into their genitals to reduce excess tissue, bulges or bulges in their bathing suits or underwear.

Talk to your doctor if you are concerned. The provider may recommend labiaplasty if it is medically required. This reduces the size and shape of the labia.

This procedure has been more popular in recent years for cosmetic reasons. Birenbaum stresses that the International Society for the Study of Vulvovaginal Disease and the American College of OB/GYN oppose labiaplasty for aesthetic reasons. It’s a serious medical procedure that doesn’t provide much benefit.

Birnbaum stated, “It won’t enhance a person’s sexual response, and may not result in an increase in their body image.”

People who have trouble with their body image due to their vulvas need to talk to their doctor. It is normal to have labia minora longer than the labia maina.

Variations on the normal

Many people wonder how their genitals compare with others at one time or another. Remember that genitals are just as varied in size and shape as other parts of the body. Talk to your doctor if your vulva appearance is affecting your daily life. If you aren’t sure, don’t worry. It is a normal part of life.
