Five Lord of the Rings games to launch in the next 2 years, according to Embracer Group

Five Lord of the Rings games are in development at Embracer Group. According to the company’s latest financial report, all of these titles are expected to be released within the next two years, particularly in the next fiscal year, which runs from April 1, 2023 to March 31, 2024. In August, Embracer Group purchased Intellectual property rights to literary works The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien, joining his extensive catalog of over 800 owned and controlled properties. While no exact titles were revealed in the briefing, we already know that at least four of them have been in development for quite some time now.

The first is The Lord of the Rings: Gollum from Daedalic Entertainment, which recently received a new release window, hinting at a launch sometime before September of this year. Originally slated for a 2021 release, the title has suffered several delays, with the developer’s previous update indicating that it needed more time to ensure optimized performance at launch. Although not explicitly stated, the shake-up may have been attributed to the negative fan reaction to its gameplay trailer, where many referred to the game’s outdated graphics. Earlier this month, the publisher Nacon announced a exclusive presentation for its upcoming titles, scheduled for March 9, which also includes LOTR: Gollum. I hope the game is in a better state now.

“–this acquisition has generated a great deal of interest among internal and external partners in the Lord of the Rings intellectual property, across various media formats. There are currently five games in production by external partners, which will be released over the course of in fiscal year 2023/24,” Embracer Group said in its financial report. Beyond Gollum, Free Range Games is known for working on The Lord of the Rings: Moria, a survival and base-building game centered around the Dwarves as they embark on an adventure to reclaim their lost home of Moria, located beneath the Misty Mountains. Slated for release this year on PC. A third untitled game based on the Middle-earth franchise is in development at Weta Workshop – the same digital effects company that worked on the original Peter Jackson movie trilogy Private Division (OlliOlli World) is releasing it and is set to launch in fiscal year 2024.

Perhaps the latest is EA’s The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth, a mobile game with a focus on turn-based combat, a large roster of characters from the fantasy universe, and “collectible systems in depth”. There aren’t many details about this game, but a press release notes “some in-game purchases (including random items)” – raising suspicions as to whether this is a game gacha, in the same vein as Genshin Impact. As mentioned earlier, there have been no sightings of a fifth LOTR video game.

The report further notes that a film, produced by an “external partner”, is in development. In November, the company shut down Onoma (formerly Square Enix Montreal) just three weeks after rebranding. It was reported that Embracer wanted to focus on the PC and console releases, with some staff moving to the Eidos-Montreal studio.
