Samsung Galaxy Watch with built-in projector may be in the works, new patent suggests

Samsung Galaxy Watch could come with a built-in projector in the future, according to a new patent. The South Korea-based tech giant has reportedly filed a patent for a wearable with a projection screen that can mirror the main screen onto an adjacent surface or display additional detail. The proposed feature could allow users to view the videos received through different messaging apps. The leaked patent also states that the upcoming Galaxy Watch will be equipped with different lenses and LEDs to transmit images to the surface from different angles.

According to a report by Wareable, Samsung has filed a patent to equip an integrated projector on the Galaxy Watch capable of broadcasting information on the hand. The patent describes a smartwatch with “a projection display on a side portion of the case and configured to display information on a display area adjacent to the case.” It could mirror the main screen or could be used to show more details.

“It would present content in a ‘display area larger than the display area of a display module on a body part carrying a wearable accessory,’ the report adds, citing the patent. The projection may display information different from the information displayed on the display module. This may include a still image and a moving image such as broadcast content and multimedia content.

Schematics in the patent suggest lenses and LEDs, aligned in two rows to handle projection, according to the report. They could help transmit imagery to the surface from different angles. For undistorted display of content, users may need to keep their wrists straight. The report says it could allow users to watch videos sent through messaging apps. Also, it can provide video call capabilities.

Samsung has yet to share any details on the new wearable feature. Patented technologies can simply be used for prototyping and should undergo modifications before release. Such a Galaxy Watch might not even hit the market.
