MoviePass tests new Unlimited Movie Viewing plan as beta releases nationwide

New Movie Pass is testing a revival of the all-you-can-watch plan that made the service famous, but it certainly won’t cost $10 a month. The test is part of the upcoming beta expansion of the movie-watching service, which is now nationwide after opening on Tuesday to anyone who signed up for the beta’s waitlist.

MoviePass CEO Stacy Spikes told Insider that those who join the beta might run into issues that engineers are working on, and a wider relaunch to the public is expected this summer. MoviePass confirmed launch details with CNET, and Spikes announced the expansion via a YouTube video sent to the waitlist.

“We previously opened in 10 marketsbut now we let everyone [on the waitlist] across the country,” Spikes said.

This new version of MoviePass uses a credit-based system instead of flat-rate pricing, with plans varying by geographic region. The New York-based plans I can see start at a base tier of $20 for 68 credits, which MoviePass says should translate to one to three movies per month. The most expensive plan on offer is the $60 Pro tier, which MoviePass says should allow for one movie per day, with the equivalent of 1,240 credits. Unused credits will roll over, up to a maximum of two months depending on the plan selected. Outside of New York, MoviePass says its cheapest package could be as low as $10.

Pricing tiers offered in the New York region for the MoviePass beta. An “unlimited” option is among those being tested.

For New York, these prices are not bad. It’s not uncommon for a movie ticket to cost $17 or more in Manhattan, so even taking two movies off the service is still a discount. However, since the service is in beta, it’s worth keeping in mind that these prices could still change as the service moves towards its full-scale release.

For a casual moviegoer, the $20 starting price undercuts competing services in New York, but someone looking to go three or more times a week to a specific theater might be better served watching channel-owned programming. cinema like AMC A-List ($25 in New York), Unlimited treat ($24) or Alamo Drafthouse Season Pass ($30). Still, it’s worth noting that MoviePass provides access to a wider variety of theaters, using either the app to get tickets for MoviePass partner theaters or the MoviePass credit card for non-partner theaters. Spikes told Insider that his unlimited tier pricing is being tested at various levels during the beta.

The national expansion is the latest step in MoviePass’ revival after Spikes bought the brand in November 2021. MoviePass died out in 2019 after blowing the cash by offering a $10 unlimited plan. Spikes helped found MoviePass in 2011 with partner Hamel Witt, and the service has seen iterations that included a $50 per month unlimited plan at one point. Spikes was fired from the company in 2018 when it was led by Helios CEO Ted Farnsworth and MoviePass CEO Mitch Lowe. Now that Spikes is back in the MoviePass driver’s seat, he said that service plans include the integration of an optional advertising program to subsidize costs for customers. He also sees the metaverse as a possible area of growth for MoviePass.
