The best things to keep you Warm this winter, according to CNET’s Coziest Staff

Winter has definitely arrived, and unlike the Stark family, most of us don’t have giant wolves to snuggle up to to stay warm. Instead, we rely on warm clothes and cool tech to feel good.

The CNET team isn’t immune to the chill of the colder months, so we’ve put together a list of our favorite heaters to help you make the right choices this winter.

My feet get cold when it’s cold, so the obvious solution is to wear warm socks and/or Slippers. I have gone through many pairs of machine washable soft slippers and soft bottom sheepskin slippers over the years. But for some reason it never occurred to me until recently to get hard-soled slippers that I can also keep (instead of slipping my feet out of my slippers) when I had need to run to the end of the driveway to get mail or briefly exit through the back door to convince the dog to come in for shelter from the rain.

You have a lot of choices on what type of slipper you want and I’m not here to make judgments. But being able to keep my slippers on for those brief forays out of my California home has helped me stay warm, if only because I don’t have to change my shoes at the door and remember to put my slippers on my return. inside. Yes, of all the problems in the world, this is a small one. But for me, it was a game changer.

This Suburbs Electric Fireplace is a space heater that looks like a fireplace. Although it may sound corny, this product is extremely comfortable and inviting. It easily warms up my poorly heated basement and it’s also soothing to look at. Yes, I know it’s not a real fire. But my brain just says “Ooooh, survival” and blacks out when I sit by the heater. It’s simply a big step up from a regular space heater in terms of ambience.

My only caveat is that it cannot oscillate and only has one intensity level, unlike many clumsier space heaters. Still, I like that it has a thermostat, timer, and remote control. From a crucial safety standpoint, it’s also easy to remember to turn it off because the fake flames continue to flash as long as the heater is on. I recommend sitting next to it while wearing fleece-lined jeans, my other favorite buy this season, while holding a cup of something warm.

I’m generally not a “you have to buy this brand” person, but: you have to buy this brand. Smartwool tops, bottoms, beanies, gloves and socks are made from merino wool, which promises to regulate body temperature and wick away sweat. And in my experience, it works: Smartwool products have become my go-to when I know I’m going to have to be outside in the cold and make a big difference.

They are expensive, but an investment – these parts hold up over time. I’ve had base layer shirts for years now. It’s not for nothing that they also offer plus size clothing and have implemented a number of eco-friendly practices.

Ocoopa

I regularly rely on hand warmers, but I don’t like single use products, so I went looking for something I could rely on and landed on this. It’s basically a big battery and heating element, with a USB-C charging port. There are three levels of heat output, with the top level being very hot, and I find that a full charge usually lasts me around two hours when it’s cold enough to need it.

I live in SC so most of the time the weather is pretty reasonable and you don’t need to have a lot of cold weather gear. For this reason, most of the time I only need a sweatshirt to start the day, then in the afternoon I am in shorts and a t-shirt. I don’t like to spend a lot of money on clothes (never have), so this Hanes sweatshirt is perfect.

It keeps me warm enough, is soft and has a hood and a front pocket for my hands. It fits true to size and has held up well to many washes. It’s available in a huge number of colors, so you can have a few without breaking the bank.

CBS

Sure, I could turn up the heat throughout my house or huddle dangerously close to the heating vents. But when the chills set in, I’m much more likely to reach for my heating pad. Lush, localized warmth warms me up in minutes while lowering my energy bill. Best of all, a heating pad is eminently portable, meaning I can wrap it around my feet on the couch, drape it over my lap at my desk, or radiate heat to my back while I read in bed.

Yes, it’s good to expect cold weather, but what happens when you’re traveling and you drastically underestimate the drop in temperatures? You don’t want to buy a whole new wardrobe, just something to spend a few days so your business trip or vacation doesn’t get ruined. Enter Uniqlo, a fast fashion brand with its HeatTech product line of affordable loungewear (or long underwear if you’re traditional).

For less than $20, you can pick up a pair of tights that will make your life so much easier. As a former New Yorker, I can tell you that protecting your legs is the most cost-effective way to get through a cold spell, although Uniqlo also offers tops, gloves and hats to complete your survival gear. winter on a budget. Uniqlo stores aren’t nationwide, but you can find one in Chicago, New York, Boston, Seattle, San Francisco, and the Washington, DC area (as well as Los Angeles and Orlando, though you won’t probably won’t win it). no need for HeatTech here!). Anyone can order online and get their affordable winter protections in days – or see if there’s an H&M in town with their own line of thermal long johns.
