My feet get cold when it’s cold, so the obvious solution is to wear warm socks and/or Slippers. I have gone through many pairs of machine washable soft slippers and soft bottom sheepskin slippers over the years. But for some reason it never occurred to me until recently to get hard-soled slippers that I can also keep (instead of slipping my feet out of my slippers) when I had need to run to the end of the driveway to get mail or briefly exit through the back door to convince the dog to come in for shelter from the rain.

You have a lot of choices on what type of slipper you want and I’m not here to make judgments. But being able to keep my slippers on for those brief forays out of my California home has helped me stay warm, if only because I don’t have to change my shoes at the door and remember to put my slippers on my return. inside. This Suburbs Electric Fireplace is a space heater that looks like a fireplace. Although it may sound corny, this product is extremely comfortable and inviting. It easily warms up my poorly heated basement and it’s also soothing to look at. Yes, I know it’s not a real fire. But my brain just says “Ooooh, survival” and blacks out when I sit by the heater. It’s simply a big step up from a regular space heater in terms of ambience.

My only caveat is that it cannot oscillate and only has one intensity level, unlike many clumsier space heaters. Still, I like that it has a thermostat, timer, and remote control. From a crucial safety standpoint, it’s also easy to remember to turn it off because the fake flames continue to flash as long as the heater is on. I recommend sitting next to it while wearing fleece-lined jeans, my other favorite buy this season, while holding a cup of something warm.

Smartwool tops, bottoms, beanies, gloves and socks are made from merino wool, which promises to regulate body temperature and wick away sweat. And in my experience, it works: Smartwool products have become my go-to when I know I’m going to have to be outside in the cold and make a big difference.

They are expensive, but an investment – these parts hold up over time. I’ve had base layer shirts for years now. It’s not for nothing that they also offer plus size clothing and have implemented a number of eco-friendly practices.
