Nokia 6 launch: HMD Global phones need more than good design and Nokia logo

The launch of Nokia 6 last weekend was like the icing on the cake for tech enthusiasts sated with the gadgets and tech on display at the 2017 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas the first week of the year. The new Nokia 6, which would be the first of many Nokia Android Phones on the way, has been announced without much fanfare – a simple post on HMD Global’s website announced the first of the long-awaited Nokia Android phones, although the minds of Many Nokia fans were put off by the fact that the new Nokia 6 smartphone was a Chinese exclusive.

Nokia 6 offers eager fans of the Nokia brand a 5.5-inch 1080p display, Snapdragon 430 chipset paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, 16MP rear camera, 8MP front camera, sensor fingerprint, a 3000 mAh battery and Android 7.0 Nougat. Pretty standard price for a mid-range smartphone, right? This is exactly why HMD Global – the company holding the exclusive license to sell Nokia-branded smartphones – may struggle to succeed if the rest of Nokia Android phones are developed along the same lines, despite the revered Nokia brand.

Nokia 6 internals can be compared very well with Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 and Redmi 3s Prime, Lenovo K6 Power. Keep in mind that these phones cost several thousand rupees less than the retail price of the Android-powered Nokia 6 in China (which roughly translates to Rs. 17,000), although the price is unlikely of the Nokia 6 India being announced as it is supposed to be China -Only smartphone.

It’s not just us who have made these comparisons. If you were to look at Nokia 6 reviews online, plenty of others are making those comparisons as well. At the time of this writing, our report on the launch of the Nokia 6 had garnered a fair share of complaints that it was too expensive. The Snapdragon 430 chipset used in Nokia 6 is usually found in Android smartphones priced below Rs. 15,000 and below. And around that Rs. 17,000 mark, Android-based smartphones such as the Lenovo Z2 Plus or LeEco Le Max 2 are available with high-end Snapdragon 820 chips.

Not to say that HMD Global is alone in taking this approach with the Nokia 6 – think of the recently launched Moto M, which is comparable to the Nokia 6 in terms of features, design, specs and price. HMD’s new Nokia 6 smartphone boasts high-level craftsmanship and the use of premium materials like 6000 series aluminum, the same used in the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s. iPhone 6 Plus from 2014. It’s probably fair to mention that the bendgate problem of iPhones was supposed to be solved with the use of premium 7000 series aluminum in the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus . Then the 2.5D glass of the Nokia 6 curves too well at the edges, like the newer iPhone models or the OnePlus 3T.

But based on what we’ve seen of the Nokia 6 so far, it looks like its manufacturer is betting heavily on the value of the Nokia brand and only offering the design as the reason for users to choose it over the rest. . In the world of budget Android phones, value for money is king and we think a good portion of people will look past the legendary Nokia name on the box – at this price it’s unlikely the design is quite disruptive.

If HMD Global’s Nokia really wants to make a comeback and gain market share, instead of just being a me too player, it really needs to be more price competitive. We hope it can better calibrate its pricing strategy before Nokia-branded Android phones land in India later this year.
