Real Madrid reportedly emerge as shock destination for former Tottenham defender

Real Madrid reportedly emerge as shock destination for former Tottenham defender

Serge Aurier released by Tottenham

Following the addition of Emerson Royal on deadline day, Serge Aurier’s Tottenham contract was terminated.

Having made 110 appearances for the lilywhites, Aurier struggled in London. Although a capable defender, he was also prone to moments of madness, such as rash challenges and regular switching off, much to the frustration of the Tottenham faithful.

As a result, a new right-back was a priority this summer, and while Takehiro Tomiyasu (now of Arsenal) was on their radar for much of the summer, they eventually opted for Emerson Royal, who joined from Barcelona.

While yet to pull up any trees for Nuno Espirito Santo, Emerson appears a shrewd acquisition based on his success at Real Betis, and at just 23 years old, will continue to improve.

Ivorian a shock target for Real Madrid

Amazingly, the Ivorian full-back, who played for PSG before Spurs, is now reportedly a shock target for Spanish giants Real Madrid.

As per Superdeporte, the Spanish side are looking at Aurier as a low-cost cover at right-back, as first choice Dani Carvajal suffered yet another injury setback.

Whether he could do the job for Carlo Ancelotti’s side at the very highest level is another matter entirely, having flattered to deceive for Jose Mourinho’s side. However, he would certainly offer a cheap alternative allowing the side from the Capital to focus their funds on Kylian Mbappe.

Would he do a job for Los Blancos, or would it prove a waste of time?
