Alycia Debnam-Carey talks Steven Clark flashback potential (Interview)

Alycia Debnam-Carey spoke to The Natural Aristocrat about the potential for a father/daughter flashback scene on Fear the Walking Dead and Alicia Clark’s nuanced journey ahead of Season 6.

The following question was asked by The Natural Aristocrat® during a virtual press roundtable for Fear The Walking Dead with Alycia Debnam-Carey, Colman Domingo, Colby Minifie, and Maggie Grace.

Interview with Alycia Debnam-Carey:

The Natural Aristocrat [Nir Regev]: I felt one of the highest developmental points for Alicia’s character was when she found out her father actually took his own life. When Madison told Alicia her father wasn’t really in a car accident, that it was intentional. A lot of the early episodes in Season 6 deal thematically with reverting back to who you always were. That it’s inevitable when you’re alone.

Do you see Alicia ever reverting to the vulnerable person found in that moment? Would you like to see a flashback father/daughter scene with Alicia’s father Steven Clark*?

Alycia Debnam-Carey: Yeah! I’ve never even thought about doing a flashback like that! But I’m always for showing some of the more revealing aspects of a character, before this whole apocalypse. And I do think it’s tragic… I feel like through this whole thing Alicia’s had a really rough run and she doesn’t have anyone left, and she’s an orphan…

But I do think now she has had to work through so much pain & grief and we’re on the other side of it in a way. She’s realized that there is no point in doing this, unless you can find hope in the future. Hope & possibility with the people around you.

Yeah, it’s interesting you bring up that moment. That felt like such a huge developmental point for me too. I just feel like there’s been all these little evolutions that Alicia has had. It’s hard to necessarily pinpoint… You know, when you see it in the big picture, there’s been so many nuanced moments that have led her to become the person she is now.

At the end of season five, we did start to lead into a more hopeful version of Alicia. And I do think that will bring back a little bit more of her tenderness and her compassion…

But still, we’ve come to learn that she’s also pulled this kind of pragmatism from other characters that she needs to maintain. It all lends itself to the reason why she’s still standing.

Thanks Alycia!

Thank you!

* Disclosure: Nir Regev, the Editor of The Natural Aristocrat®, wrote & submitted a ‘Fear the Walking Dead’ script to the WB Television Workshop competition in May 2018 envisioning this scenario. The script was a flashback episode of the Clark family and the events leading to Steven Clark’s last day.
