Christina Qu’s Melancholy New Dream

We first heard from Christina Qu in December, upon the release of her debut single “Bird Falling From the Sky“. That track introduced The Static Dive readers to a talented young singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist from Toronto, Canada. Formally trained in classical music, her sound blends elements of both it and jazz with an ethereal dream-pop vibe.

Still just seventeen years-old, Christina Qu currently plays both flute and viola in her high school orchestra. On her popular YouTube channel, Qu shares her musical explorations on Piano, saxophone, guitar, and more. The diversely talented teen offers her own original jazz-infused take on popular pop songs.

“Another Sunrise” is the brand new single from Christina Qu, released worldwide via all major streaming services on March 9, 2024. On the track, an ensemble of piano, guitar, drums, and synths lays down a sparsely arranged but sonically textured mix of pop chill and jazz improvisation, with just a hint of tango in the drop. On the mic, Christina offers a dreamy meditation on motivation, procrastination and the escape of a good night’s sleep.

"The different sections' tempo changes/mood changes within a short song, and the flick of the piano at the end, are inspired by the sporadic nature of Chaminade's ‘Toccata 39’, which is a short piece I love to play on the piano."
