MJ Ross is an emerging independent electronic music composer and producer making his solo debut in 2023. The New Haven, Connecticut-based recording artist creates atmospheric soundscapes. His sound is a textured mix of ambient synths, hypnotic melodies, and syncopated downtempo grooves.
The classically trained musician first started playing piano when he was just seven years old. However, it is only recently that the versatile composer decided to try his hand at electronic music. In September he will release his debut album “Dystopiac”.
“Sky Drifter” is the brand new single from MJ Ross, released worldwide via all major streaming services on June 9, 2023. Ethereal synths and muted rhythmic arpeggios open the track. A pulsating bass beats at the heart of the mix, giving the dreamy ambient electronic track a taste of trance as Ross transports us to new sonic realms.

7 Questions with MJ Ross
Where are you from?
New Haven, Connecticut.
How long have you been making music?
While I have been playing classical piano since the age of 7, it is only within the past year that my musical journey has taken a turn, and I ventured into the realm of composing Electronica using a synthesizer. During this time, I have been meticulously crafting individual pieces, each intended to be part of my upcoming debut album.
Who are the musicians involved in your project?
This is all solo work, just me.
Who are your biggest musical influences?
For electronic music, without a doubt, Tangerine Dream, Jean-Michele Jarre, Vangelis. While my college buddies were banging their heads to Metallica, I was listening to Tangerine Dream on full blast.
What is your greatest non-musical influence?
The influence of nature and the outdoors holds a significant place in my creative process. Being an avid hiker, I’ve discovered that immersing myself in the natural world has a profound impact on shaping my music. During my hikes, I’ll find myself listening to recordings of my synth sessions (I record everything, even if I’m noodling around). And during these hikes, I’ll often find several captivating patterns, testing their resonance with me. These organic inspirations will often become the building blocks for constructing new song structures.
What inspired you to create this project?
I have always held a deep fascination for science fiction and the captivating aesthetics reminiscent of Blade Runner. Drawing inspiration from these influences, my debut album, titled “Dystopiac,” comprises seven meticulously crafted songs that delve into my obsession with dystopian narratives.
Within this musical journey, I explore the themes of societal downfall, cataclysmic decline, environmental ruin, technological dominance, and government oppression. However, interwoven into each composition is a driving force of hope and the notion of “correction.” In a way, you could call me an optimistic “sucker” for happy endings, as I strive to infuse each song with a touch of positivity and the belief in a brighter future.
What are your plans for the future (musically)?
Following the highly anticipated release of “Dystopiac” at the end of September, my immediate focus will shift towards immersing myself in the creation of new music. In today’s fast-paced landscape, the demands of social media and album marketing can often overwhelm, leaving little room for the exploration of fresh musical ideas.
There is a part of me that eagerly awaits the moment “Dystopiac” is unleashed, as it will grant me the freedom to retreat into my basement recording studio. With a satisfying crack of my knuckles, I will embark on the exhilarating journey of crafting my second album. It’s safe to say that I am going nowhere but forward, and the release of “Dystopiac” marks merely the beginning of an exciting musical odyssey.
