Where are you from?

I was born and raised in Glasgow, Scotland. 

How long have you been making music?

I started writing songs at age 13 and started recording at 18 but I didn’t release my first single til 2017 as I spent years learning and perfecting my craft so it’s been 6 years of releasing but it’s been almost 20 years since I started writing as I’ll be 33 on my birthday in December.  

Who are the musicians involved in your project?

So I wrote this song with Jiro Suzuki who is based out in Japan. He sent me a piano part and I wrote the song over it and we built the song over emails and WhatsApps. My long time producer Chris Stagg produced the song with me and I’ve worked with him for 5 years now. He does all my artist songs as we have a great connection.  I had my friend Robert do the live strings and my friend Faith joined me on doing the backing vocals. 

It was mixed by Thomas Warren who I met through working with Stargate and mastered by Pete Maher who I’ve worked with before.  

Who are your biggest musical influences?

I love music so I take influence from many different genres and artists to blend into my own style but artists like Kelly Clarkson, P!nk, Adele, Sam Smith, Callum Scott, Lewis Capaldi and Taylor Swift are all big influences of mine. I love raw, honest songwriting. 

What is your greatest non-musical influence?

My greatest non musical influence is just life in general. I love real life stories in songs and I always have the disclaimer to people in my life that they may end up with a song about them haha. I also love to sit in a cafe or coffee shop and listen to people talking and pick up phrases or lines that inspire me to write. My friend in Nashville calls it your songwriting antennae and you always have to have it up. I’ve written songs after reading books, watching movies so you can really pick up inspiration from anywhere if you are switched on.  

What inspired you to create this project?

This was one of those songs that wrote itself really. In about 15 minutes after hearing the piano part my collaborator Jiro sent me, I had the song written. He lives in Japan so I had the initial demo finished by the time he woke up the next day. It just flowed out of me and came from my inner child. It’s about generational abuse and trauma in families and explores the things that are handed down through generations and questions why this happens. 

When I listened back to the song the first time, I was so proud and felt really emotional for the child inside me. I have been able to work through a lot of my traumas and I feel this song is giving a voice to my inner child. This song is one that is from my inner child to any other person that suffered abuse and hopefully makes them feel less alone. 

The thinking behind releasing it on Fathers Day is that it isn’t always a happy day for everyone and a lot of memories can be triggered so again, I wanted people to not feel so alone on a day that can often come with a lot of emotions good and bad. 

What are your plans for the future (musically)?

I have a bunch of new music coming this year and it’s some of my best work. The next single is uptempo which is fun and I love doing that as much as my ballads. I’m so excited to release them and I’ve always teased a Christmas project so maybe this will be the year for that. Next year I hope to get back on stage and maybe get involved in a tour.
