Lauren Rathbun’s New ‘Bird With A Broken Wing’

Lauren Rathbun is an emerging singer, songwriter, actor and writer who made her professional solo recording career in 2018 with the single “My Almost Lover”. That track introduced a multifaceted Salt Lake City native and with a timeless adult contemporary pop sound. Since her debut, Lauren Rathbun has released three singles and has connected with fans around the world thanks to successes like last year’s upbeat “Into You”.

In Utah, Lauren attended the Madeleine Choir School. She traveled the world as a member of the Cathedral of the Madeleine Choir and once had the opportunity to sing for Pope John Paul II at the Vatican. She graduated with honors from the University of Utah for Musical Theatre Performance, and in 2016 relocated to New York City to pursue a life in the arts.

“Bird With a Broken Wing” is the latest single from Lauren Rathbun, released worldwide via all major streaming services on October 21, 2022. The song is a collaboration with producer/composer Ayhan Sahin. Like Lauren’s previous work, the track is being released by Sahin’s own label and production company, Young Pals Music.

The track opens as a wistful and melancholy ballad. Backed by an organic ensemble of guitars, bass, drums and piano, Rathbun gradually builds the tune to a defiant anthem. She questions the wisdom of a former partner’s departure, but ultimately resolves to continue on her own.

7 Questions with Lauren Rathbun

Where are you from?

I am from Salt Lake City, Utah. I moved to NYC after college to pursue musical theatre.

How long have you been making music?

I have always written songs as a way to express myself and process feelings, but I did not record or do anything with them until moving to NYC, when I met people in the music business who took an interest in me and my work.

Who are the musicians involved in your project?

Songwriters: Ayhan Sahin, Selcen Pamuk Phelps, Bernadette O’Reilly, Lauren Rathbun

Publisher: Young Pals Music (2022)
Producer: Ayhan Sahin

Musicians:
Mike Sorrentino (drums)
Carras Paton (bass)
Gene Blank (guitars)
Rob Preuss (piano and synth)
Keith Fluitt (back vocals)

Executive Producer: Bernadette O’Reilly

Mixed and Engineered by Ayhan Sahin @ 2CStudios
Mastered by Ryan Smith @ Sterling Sound

Artwork Design by Emre Emirgil

Who are your biggest musical influences?

My biggest influences for this song were Olivia Newton John, Abba, and Barbra Streisand

What inspired you to create this project?

I had a particularly challenging year in 2021 due to an accident and health issues I endured. The lyrics and sentiment of this song, which Ayhan had written years ago for his musical “Swedish Style,” resonated with me, especially the line “I will fly over mountains, sing, without you, without you.” So, when Ayhan approached me about turning this into a single release, I felt inspired to go forth with it. I contributed alternative lyrics to make the song fit outside of the musical from which it originated, and had a meaningful experience singing and recording it.

What are your plans for the future (musically)?

I am working on an original pop/rock EP to release, as well as an original musical theatre cabaret outlining some noteworthy recent personal experiences.

Is there anything else you would like to say?

I am grateful to Ayhan for this meaningful collaboration, and to my parents who are so encouraging of my musical (and all creative) endeavors. I hope the unique lyrics and story of this song find their way to listeners’ hearts, as it did mine.
