Midnight Bandit’s Late Night Drive Thru Fog World

Midnight Bandit is the professional name of emerging independent electronic composer and producer, Jared Doherty-Walsh. He first began making music in 2012, inspired by a wide array of musical genres and a lifelong love of video games. Growing up, he had a special affinity for driving games like Gran Turismo

Cars have always been a source of joy for Jared. For years, driving his own car remained a seemingly unattainable goal due to the artist’s ongoing battle with Schizoaffective Disorder. However, earlier this year the 32 year-old was able to buy a car of his own.

Music has functioned as a great escape for Doherty-Walsh. Since his debut as Midnight Bandit the prolific composer has produced a remarkable volume of work, including over three dozen album and EP releases. With a fluid mix of styles and genres he creates music that is dark, dreamy and often beautiful.

Fog World is the brand new album from Midnight Bandit, released worldwide via all major streaming services on October 7, 2022. Jared composed the 9-song collection with driving in mind. From the ambient synths and percussive arpeggios of the opener “Brookhaven” to the angelic melodies and breakbeat rhythms of “Once More Round The Sun”, the record lives in a world of dimly-lit late night street corners.

Jared Doherty-Walsh fills that hypnagogic space with a stylistic bouillabaisse of downtempo grooves. Chiptune space dust floats through “Norman’s Hotel” while Asian melodies ride a trip-hop beat on “Merry-Go-Round”. Although the record forgoes genre at every turn, it remains true to the ethereal Midnight Bandit aesthetic.

As the album progresses, the sound becomes more organic, and darker. Drum machines meet drum sets and synths share space with lo-fi pianos. Minor keys, haunting tones and ominous titles suggest something sinister on “The Basement” and “You Can’t Leave This Space”. “Under Streetlights” takes us back to the streets with a bit of jazz before transforming into a hypnotic mix of analog and electronic percussion.
