umritank’s New Dystopian Diary

umritank is a Ukranian Indietronica musician making his debut in 2021. The Kyiv (Kiev) native experiments with acoustic and electronic sounds to create his own unique hybrid of Darkwave Alternative Rock and Dark Electro-Pop. His sound combines these elements into a rich Postmodern mix. On September 23, 2021 he debuted this innovative new sound with the four song EP “Dear Diary.”

Created in collaboration with Brooklyn-based producer Wade Alin, “Dear Diary” is a concept record of sorts, using words and sounds to paint a picture of a present day dystopia. Throughout the record, electronic and organic elements intermingle to reflect both the beauty and hard industrial reality of city life. Like a modern “Life During Wartime,” umritank chronicles the day-to-day hardship of average people as they navigate their way through life in a scene of urban decay.

It is a diary of life of different characters in a postmodern urban city, where industry, dirt, dusk, storm clouds are mixed with innocence, sensuality and naivety in the atmosphere of chaos.

From the frantic rhythmic poetry and the Trip-Hop meets Dark House beat of “run, forest, run” to the acoustic guitar and Lo-fi beat of the relationship post-mortem “used to do,” umritank paints his portrait with a rich palette of musical styles. Organic and electronic instruments are interchangeable throughout, and often shift mid-song. Synth basses become bass guitars and then slide back again. Ambient synths transform into electric guitars. Like flowers sprouting up through cracks in the sidewalk, warm wood tones force their way into cold electronic spaces.

“Dear Diary” presents the private thoughts of its characters in often confused streams of consciousness monologues. The residents of this city are searching and have grown disillusioned with the search. They are running, but they are losing the will to do so. This entropy is reflected musically as well. For example, “food_driver” gradually transforms from Hard Industrial Techno tones to a cello and piano duet until ultimately dissolving into Acid Rock guitar noise. “wasted” follows with a low blues groove that shifts back and forth between the real and synthetic.
