Cam Gersh is the professional name of producer, songwriter and rapper Cameron Gerstenslager. The 20 year-old artist and entrepreneur began making beats while he was still in high school. Some of his earliest remixes went viral on YouTube. That success encouraged the Doylestown, Ohio native to dive into music production professionally.
Cam’s early work was in EDM sub genres like Electro House and Dubstep. However, he eventually found that he had a passion for making Hip-hop and Trap beats and made that the focus of his work. Now based in Florida, the enterprising producer has worked with a number of independent Hip-hop artists including; Boy Floss, Andrew Kish, KrayZayMusic, and Lil Shredda. Now he is making his debut as a solo artist.
“The Big Dog” is the brand new album from Cam Gersh, released worldwide to all major streaming services on April 20, 2021. The seven track record finds the artist flexing his creative muscles with an eclectic mix of musical genres and styles. Through the course of the record he mixes Trap, Boom Bap and Lo-fi beats with both analog and electronic synths and found sounds.
The record opens with the island vibes and Trap groove of “Big Vibe.” Gersh lays down a laid back rap about his dedication to the grind. The song also introduces some creative vocal modulation effects which the producer employs throughout the record. “Wannabe” follows with a low-fi breakbeat intro that opens up into a slick Trap beat. The track has a great rolling groove and some impressive freestyle rapping.
The instrumental “Angel” is a nice example of the beatmaker’s versatility with its mellow synthwave instrumentation and old-school hip-hop beat. Next, the album’s title track gets into avant-garde territory with a wild mix of industrial percussion, exotic flute and cool analog synths. “Terror Theme” follows with a slow creeper Trap beat and a freestyle horror fantasy rap.
“Second Wind” is a real highpoint with its Cage the Elephant style mix of Alternative Rock and Hip-hop. The track’s overdriven lead vocal, ambient synths and memorable melodic chorus set a cool mood. The album ends on the lo-fi freestyle “Make Things Right” which closes with a fun slice of real life as Cam answers his cell phone while still tracking and asks his girl to pick him up some Starbucks.
