20 Weirdest Rapper Names You’ve Ever Heard

This list will introduce you to some of the weirdest Rapper names of all time.

Most rappers play it safe when it comes to choosing a name. But a small minority or rappers take the risk of choosing a weird and wonderful alias.

Without a doubt, these weird Rapper Names make them stand out from the crowd. For your amusement, this list covers the funny, the outrageous, the provocative, and the downright bizarre.

Let’s jump in and find out about some of the Weirdest Rapper Names out there today.

6ix9ine

6ix9ine gets included on this list for obvious reasons.

The controversial young rapper seems to attract attention by any means possible – his appearance, his behaviour, and his name all add to his outrageous persona.

Not only did the rapper name himself after a sex position. He also chose to stylise his name with a mixture of numbers or letters, making it totally stand out, and highly memorable.

Lil Xan

Lil Xan is a young rapper who is no stranger to controversy. The Soundcloud rapper did the in-vogue thing of using ‘Lil’ at the front of his name – and then naming himself after a drug.

Xan is short for Xanax – a benzodiazepine, and a prescription drug that has proven popular in the Soundcloud and emo rap scenes.

Xanax is unquestionably a strange thing – and some would say a morally dubious thing – to name yourself after.

Flatbush Zombies

The three members of hip-hop collective Flatbush Zombies – stylised Flatbush ZOMBiES – are Meechy Darko, Zombie Juice, and Erick Arc Elliott.

For those familiar with the geography of New York, the ‘Flatbush’ part of the name will not sound so weird. But any way you look at it, naming yourself after the living dead is definitely a bold move.

Just to make their name even weirder, they stylise it so that the ‘i’ in ZOMBiES is lower-case.

Princess Nokia

Princess Nokia is the rap name of Destiny Nicole Frasqueri.

Originally going by the name Wavy Spice, she started using the ‘Princess Nokia’ alias around 2013, dropping her track ‘Nokia’ at the same time.

The name definitely has some intentional comedic value. Most people associate the brand Nokia with old ‘brick’ phones – nostalgic technology from the late 90s and early 00s.

CunninLynguists

Formed in 2000, CunninLynguists have one of the funniest, and arguably the worst names on this list.

The name is a play on the words “cunnilingus” and “linguists,” and, perhaps ironically, implies that they are good with words!

In one interview, they explained that the name was deliberately chosen to make them sound less serious:

“We were like, we want a name, but we don’t want people to take us as serious as our sound… We were just throwing names around, and CunninLynguists was born. I can’t tell you who really said it first, it sort of just came.”

Del Tha Funkee Homosapien

Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, also known as Sir DZL, is a name that is clearly a product of its time.

The cousin of Ice Cube, Del broke onto the scene with his 1991 hit “Mistadobalina.”

Looking at it one way, describing oneself as a ‘Funkee Homosapien’ could come across a little bit cringey today. Looking at it another way, it might just be the most wholesome rapper name of all time.

ScHoolboy Q

Schoolboy Q – stylised ScHoolboy Q – is the rap name of Quincy Matthew Hanley.

Alluding to youth, the name could be seen as an alternative take on diminutive rap names that start with “Lil” or “Young.”

However, in an interview, the rapper explained that his name “Schoolboy” came from a pimp who lived on his block. He also thought the name was fitting as he excelled at school.

Before he added Schoolboy into his rap name, he simply went by “Q,” standing for Quincy.

Childish Gambino

If you thought there was a good reason behind Donald Glover’s iconic rap name, you’ll probably be disappointed.

In interviews, the rapper and actor has revealed that the name was generated by a website.

The rap name generator he and his friends were using spat out the name “Childish Gambino,” and Glover instantly liked it. The rest is history.

In case you were wondering, “Gambino” is an Italian-American mafia crime family. They have= operated in New York City since the early twentieth century.

Ski Mask The Slump God

No matter how many times I hear this name, I can’t get over how weird it is.

Ski Mask The Slump God – real name Stokeley Clevon Goulbourne – was a close friend and collaborator with XXXTentaction, and is a big name in the Soundcloud rap scene.

In an interview he explained the meaning behind the name. Ski Mask stands for “by any means, even if it’s the fast way or the slow way.”

The “Slump God” bit alludes to his former Xanax use, although the rapper stated that he has now stopped using the drug.

JPEGMafia

One of the most pioneering rappers of our time, JPEGMafia is well-known for his creativity. His unusual name reflects his distinctive aesthetic.

Real name Barrington DeVaughn Hendricks, he first began releasing music under the alias Devon Hendryx.

Now nicknamed affectionately as “Peggy,” some say that the “Mafia” part of the name is similar to the idea behind the “Mob” in A$AP Mob.

Other projects have been released under the names dropboxmafia and pngmafia, suggesting the existence of some sort of collective group that never quite came to fruition.

JPEGMafia does not seem to have discussed the meaning behind his name in any published interviews.

Lil Baby

Lil Baby is one of the most successful rappers of our generation. Because of his success, it’s easy to get used to his name. But if you stop to think about it, it’s kind of hilarious.

The name derives from when he used to hang around with people who were older than him, and they diminutively called him Lil Baby. In that context, it makes sense.

However, as the trap superstar and music icon Lil Baby is today, you would be forgiven for thinking he has outgrown the name!

Earl Sweatshirt

We’re all so used to hearing this name that it doesn’t sound that weird anymore. But think about it – ‘sweatshirt’ is not a normal name for a person.

The Odd Future rapper, whose real name is Thebe Neruda Kgositsile, allegedly chose his rap name because he was a fan of the artist James Pants.

He took the name “Earl” because he likes names from older generations.

Juice WRLD

Juice WRLD is so well-known that many rap fans have simply got used to the name. But when you stop and think about it, Juice may well be the most famous weird-named rapper of all time.

The rapper, who died tragically before his time, is rightly remembered for his music. But let’s stop for a minute to give credit to the guy who had the guts – and the humour – to give himself a name that sounds a bit like a beverage superstore.

The name Juice is allegedly a reference to Tupac’s role in the 1992 film Juice.

As for the ‘WRLD’ bit – in one interview, Juice said, “Honestly, I’m not even sure where the word “WRLD” came from. I was just trying to be creative.”

B. Cool-Aid

B. Cool-Aid is a project of rapper Pink Siifu and producer Ahwlee.

The name comes from “brown Kool Aid” –  a drink made by mixing a random selection of Kool Aid flavours with alcohol.

The name reflects the duo’s approach, as they explained in one interview:

“We mix everything together, and it’s Black too. So the B stands for Brown, and the Cool-Aid is just on some cool s***, but it also encompasses where we’re from and what type of energy we wanna bring: fun energy, gathering energy.”

Fly Anakin

A frequent collaborator with the even more weirdly-named Pink Siifu, Fly Anakin is an enigmatic rapper from Richmond, Virginia.

In an interview, he listed his previous rap names – Deuce, Nathan Hale, N-Hale, then finally Fly Anakin, which he adopted in 2011.

His name is a nod to Star Wars, and seems to identify him as an uber-cool jedi – which, I have no doubt, he is.

The Koreatown Oddity

The Koreatown Oddity is the alias of Dominique Purdy – a rapper, producer, wordsmith, and former stand-up comedian.

This remarkably unusual rap name actually has a simple meaning. The rapper hails from the Koreatown area of Los Angeles, which he references often in his music.

The “Oddity” part of the name is pretty self-explanatory if you’ve come across any of the artist’s off-kilter and experimental work.

Your Old Droog

Your Old Droog is the alias of Ukrainian-born American rapper Dmitry Kutsenko.

On the surface, this rap name is indecipherably bizarre. However, it has a simple explanation.

The word “Droog” is from the Ukrainian ‘друг,’ with means “friend.” So Droog’s name actually means “Your Old Friend.”

Rap names don’t get much more wholesome than that.

Armand Hammer

Armand Hammer is a rap duo comprising Billy Woods and Elucid.

The pair have the same name as an American business magnate who died in 1990. The name is also a close homonym with the baking soda toothpaste brand Arm & Hammer.

One writer has claimed that the name “reflects both lyricists’ themes of struggle to succeed, adapt, or even survive in an inherently racist America.”

Others think it’s a reference to crack cocaine. Any way you look at it, it’s certainly an unusual choice for a rap name.

Pink Siifu

Livingston Lemorie Matthews has made music under several different monikers, but Pink Siifu has got to be the weirdest.

I went to see Pink Siifu in concert (highly recommended). Everyone I mentioned the concert to thought I was saying “Pink Seafood.”

The name actually has a great meaning. Pink Siifu is inspired by kung-fu movies, and the word “siifu” is Cantonese for “master” or “teacher.”

The “pink” part is because pink is one his favourite colours. In an interview, the rapper explained, “I want to teach color and how we feel and look at colors. I want to vibrate that.”

He went on to say, “I’m trying to teach the importance of color, and skin color. I’m very spiritual, and I believe that when we’re gone we aren’t black, white, light-skinned…But in this reality and this system, skin color is important.”

Scallops Hotel

Scallops Hotel has to top the list of weirdest rapper names. This name is so bizarre that it’s hardly recognisable as a name at all.

We have seen rappers identifying themselves with various abstract concepts and objects, but a hotel is the next level of weirdness.

Whether the hotel is supposed to be a place where scallops stay, or whether it’s just named after scallops is unknown, and frankly beside the point.

A project of Rory Ferreira – better known as Milo – the name Scallops Hotel is either the product of madness or of genius. Credit to him for going with it.
