In the world of rap, few things are more important than words. Whether mundane or profound, the last words a Rapper speaks before they die often go down in history.

All the rappers featured in this list Died before their time, whether from drugs or violence. Sadly, it’s a story that’s all too common. At least we can say that all the artists mentioned here made a big impact on the world – in most cases, even up to their very last words.

Important note – in some cases, we don’t know the last words that were spoken, so we have gone with the last words that they broadcast on stage or on social media.

Tupac

Few rappers have been so influential and loved as Tupac Shakur. The legendary rapper was tragically shot and killed in a drive-by shooting on 7 September 1996 in Las Vegas.

A police officer who was present in Tupac’s dying moments revealed that his last words were “f*** you.” The words came in response to Officer Chris Carroll who asked the rapper, “who shot you?”

Carroll said that he had asked Tupac the question several times, and Tupac had been “ignoring” him. As Caroll described it, “He looked at me and he took a breath to get the words out, and he opened his mouth, and I thought I was actually going to get some cooperation. And then the words came out – ‘f*** you.’”

It’s clear that Tupac didn’t back down on his opposition to the police until his very last. He fell unconscious soon after this moment, and died in hospital six days later.

XXXTentacion

XXXTentacion built something of a cult following in his short time in the rap game, with his distinctive brand of emo rap.

The rapper was tragically murdered on 18 June 2018 in Deerfield Beach, Florida, aged 20. According to witnesses, XXXTentacion’s last words were “what is this for?” He was understandably confused by the ambush – an armed robbery that turned fatal.

A few hours before that fateful moment, X shared an Instagram live video which, some fans say, seemed to predict his own death. He said:

If worse thing comes to worst, and I f****** die or some s*** and I’m not able to see out my dreams, I at least want to know that the kids perceived my message and were able to make something of themselves and able to take my message and use it and turn it into something positive and to at least have a good life.

Nipsey Hussle

Nipsey Hussle was a rapper and entrepreneur who was making big strides before his untimely death on 31 March 2019.

He was shot and killed outside his clothing store, Marathon Clothing, by 29 year old Eric Holder, who was sentenced to sixty years in prison. The details are blurry from reports, but an argument broke out between the two before the shooting. Hussle was evidently known to the killer, and in court, it was established that the killing was to some extent premeditated.

According to an eyewitness who was also injured, Nipsey Hussle’s last words were simply: “He shot me. He shot me.”

Pop Smoke

Bashar Barakah Jackson, better known as Pop Smoke, died at a tragically young age, when his career was just taking off. He was ambushed and murdered in his home in Hollywood on 19 February 2020, aged just 20.

According to sources, Amelia Rose was with Pop Smoke at the time before his death. Pop had just headed to the bathroom when Rose encountered the assailants. She said that Pop Smoke’s last words were, “I’ll be back.”

Pop Smoke sent out a tweet less than half an hour before he was attacked and killed. The tweet was a retweet about Farina cereal, which he shared with laughing and star emojis.

Some fans took comfort in the thought that Pop Smoke was simply chilling and having a good time moments before his life was taken.

Lil Peep

In terms of his success as an artist, Lil Peep was on a huge upward trajectory when he tragically died on 15 November 2017. He died from a suspected drug overdose on his tour bus in Tucson, Arizona.

The pioneering emo rapper regularly discussed his issues with drug addiction in both his lyrics and on social media. It would seem that touring took its toll on the young artist, and sadly pushed him to the edge.

On the day of his death, the rapper shared two ominous Instagram posts. One post had the caption, “When I die You’ll love me.” The other Instagram post pictured him with what appear to be two pills on his tongue, with the caption “fucc it.”

Juice WRLD

The celebrated emo rapper Juice WRLD gave an emotional speech at the end of a show, shortly before he died of a drug overdose on 8 December 2019.

From the stage he proclaimed these words of gratitude and advice to his fans:

I love y’all from the bottom of my f**king heart… I want to to tell you that y’all can do whatever the f**k you want to do in this life. Whether you want to be a rapper, an actor, a doctor or a lawyer – whatever the f**k you want to be, you can do that s**t. So go out there, put in the work and do that s**t. I f**king love y’all. Juice WRLD, until the world blows.

Juice overdosed whilst on board a private jet, flying from Los Angeles to Chicago. It seems likely that Juice swallowed several Percocet pills to hide them from the police, as it was known that law enforcement were waiting for the plane to land after being informed that there were drugs and firearms on board.

Mac Miller

Mac Miller was one of the great rappers of our generation before his untimely death on 7 September 2018, aged 26. Mac died in his home in Studio City, Los Angeles from an accidental drug overdose from fentanyl, cocaine, and alcohol.

The tour for his now legendary album Swimming was approaching in October, and earlier that day Mac had been tweeting to encourage fans to pick up tickets. He tweeted, “The show is going to be special every night. I wish it started tomorrow. It starts October 27th.”

Mac also posted an Instagram story of a vinyl playing the closing moments of “So It Goes” – the last track on Swimming. Ironically, in a deleted tweet, posted just hours before his death, Mac said, “The end of So It Goes is so beautiful man. I told Jon Brion to play the ascension into heaven and he nailed it.”

Lil Loaded

Lil Loaded’s rap career was just taking off before his tragic death on 31 May 2021, aged 20. The young rapper rose to rapid success with his viral track “6locc 6a6y.”

Loaded, whose real name was Dashawn Maurice Robertson, died apparently from suicide, by a gunshot wound to the head. According to his mother, he was distraught about a break-up.

Before he died, the rapper shared a series of emotional message on his Instagram, as follows:

Dear most high, please forgive me for my shortcomings and all of the times I’ve fell short of making you proud and being appreciative of the blessings that have been put in my life. Sometimes the lines are blurred between being solid and being heartless. 

I want to thank you for how far I’ve come and the people you’ve put in my life to keep me grounded and humble through everything, and I love every single one of those people that are genuinely for me. 

I ask for entrance into your kingdom thru all of my mistakes. I know you love all your children, and I’m ready for my heart and soul to join you.

The messages seem to suggest that, tragically, the young rapper was planning his death.

In the case of all of these rappers, while they are still honoured to this day, their family, friends, and fans would all wish they were still with us, sharing their talent and creativity with the world.
