Surah Waqiah: Ayaat 1-18

Itha waqaAAati alwaqiAAatu

Laysa liwaqAAatiha kathibatun

Khafidatun rafiAAatun 4Itha rujjati alardu rajja

Wabussati aljibalu bassa

Fakanat habaan munbaththa

Wakuntum azwajan thalathatan

Faashabu almaymanati ma ashabu almaymanati

Waashabu almashamati ma ashabu almashamati

Waalssabiqoona alssabiqoona

Olaika almuqarraboona

Fee jannati alnnaAAeemi

Thullatun mina alawwaleena

Waqaleelun mina alakhireena

AAala sururin mawdoonatin

Muttakieena AAalayha mutaqabileena

Yatoofu AAalayhim wildanun mukhalladoona

Biakwabin waabareeqa wakasin min maAAeenin

When the event befalleth –

There is no denying that it will befall –

Abasing (some), exalting (others);

When the earth is shaken with a shock

And the hills are ground to powder

So that they become a scattered dust,

And ye will be three kinds:

(First) those on the right hand; what of those on the right hand?

And (then) those on the left hand; what of those on the left hand?

And the foremost in the race, the foremost in the race:

Those are they who will be brought nigh

In gardens of delight;

A multitude of those of old

And a few of those of later time.

On lined couches,

Reclining therein Face to face.

There wait on them immortal youths

With bowls and ewers and a cup from a pure spring

Normally we have past, present and future tense in a sentence. For example, “He did it” is in the past tense and “He will do” is in the future tense. The words that are used in the Quran, “idhaa waqa’atil waaqi’ah”, are not in the future tense but it was said with certainty that it happened.  The occurrence has not occurred but it was so certain that it was said that it has happened. Laysa liwaq’Atiha kaathibah And there is no doubt in that even to the least extent. The glory of that event will be such that, Khafidhatun raafi’Ah. Some will be humiliated and the humiliation will cover their faces. Wawujoohun yawmaithin basirah- And some faces, that Day, will be sad and dismal. (Quran 75:24). There will be darkness covering their faces. wataswaddu wujoohun (Quran 3:106). Some faces will be (in the gloom of) black. Some will be raafi’Ah that is exalted. Yawma tabyaddu wujoohun (Quran 75:24). Their faces will shine. Wujoohun yawmaithin naAAimah (Quran 88:8). –(Other) faces that Day will be joyful.  They will be very joyous at their hard work. They will be having shining faces, very bright. The humiliated ones and the exalted ones will be separated on that Day. In the present world, the righteous and disobedient, the pious and the rebellious all live together. But on that Day, there will be a clear separation. Waimtazoo alyawma ayyuha almujrimoon (Quran 36:59)-And O ye in sin! Get ye apart this Day!

There will then be a Terrible Earth Quake. The Quran clearly picturizes the scene that will take place at the end of time. The mountains will completely crumble, powdered to dust. How strong are the mountains but they will so crumble that they will be carried away by wind like that of cotton fibers and will become like floating dust particles like how the gale blows. After this, the mankind will be separated into three groups. The one group will be on the right hand side and these are the righteous people who will be given the records in their right hand. And how fortunate are these companions of the right! And they will be asked to read their book of deeds. They will be very joyous and come running to their family and companions happily. There will be then people who will be given the Book of deeds from their back to their left hands. They will cry for death and they will wish for death. They will wish that they are turned into dust and no sign of them was left so they don’t witness this Day. This occurrence is so certain to occur and this has been oft repeated in Quran. When we are to face test, there will be some effect on our hearts like there will be some worry and fear and today, the effect of the test is not present in the hearts of Muslims. When some mighty trial is to come, Muslims used to worry and turn to Allah ﷻ seeking refuge from that trial. The upcoming mighty trial will bring an effect on the Muslims but today there is no such effect on the hearts and minds of Muslims. The effect is not seen in their lives. When one knows there will an income tax raid, he will get prepared for that, checking all his accounts. The Muslim doesn’t give that much of reaction when it comes to Qayamah. The consequence of this is he lives in this world as if there is no death. He doesn’t care that he will die one day. He says he will die but no effect is seen in him. That is why this has been oft repeated in the Quran and the Prophet ﷺ asked us to remember the destroyer of pleasures, the death very often. This is done so the effect is seen in our lives; our heart absorbs this and shows the effect hearing its narrations. The Qayamat is such a big event and there will such a terrible earth quake and there will such a fear that a pregnant woman will drop her load. All the wild animals in the forests will run towards cities fearing. This is definitely going to happen.

Out of the three groups separated, there will be the third group, the foremost group, which will be very close to Allah ﷻ. They will be enjoying in the gardens. A large group of Prophets (peace be on all of them) a small group of other people will be in this group. They will recline on golden thrones. Everyone will be so seated that they will be facing each other. Little children scattered like shining pearls will be roaming around them. They will have in their hands glasses of wine. Normally kids are really cute and then when they are like pearls and that too they will always remain as kids, how beautiful it would be! The Quran says they will look cute and beautiful like the scattered pearls. They will have the fresh wine flowing from the glasses.
