Cameron Crowe has remained one of the most well-known names in the music industry. He rose to fame as the youngest journalist at Rolling Stone Magazine. Additionally, he married rock royalty Nancy Wilson, a member of the Seattle-based group Heart. Throughout Crowe’s career, he’s also written and directed many notable movies, including Say Anything and Almost Famous. One of his movies, Singles, released in 1992, is credited with bringing the Seattle grunge scene mainstream. Like his other movies, it features an amazing Soundtrack filled with songs that captured one of the most memorable music genres of the 90s. Crowe wrote the original script in 1984, initially choosing Phoenix, Arizona, as the location. However, after Andrew Wood, lead singer of Mother Love Bone and Malfunkshun, died of a drug overdose, he saw how the tight-knit music community in Seattle gathered together to grieve. One of Crowe’s earlier movies, Say Anything featured a Song from the same group. So, the director decided to use the rainy city as a backdrop. The soundtrack was released twice, first alongside the initial movie’s release and then, sadly, two days after Chris Cornell, lead singer of Soundgarden and Audio Slave, died. The second soundtrack release featured additional songs Cornell wrote after he saw the fictitious song titles the grunge group created for the movie Citizen Dick played. Before going solo, Westerberg was the lead singer and guitarist for The Replacements. After the group disbanded, he went solo, releasing three albums or different labels. His first two solo releases were on the Singles Soundtrack. Additionally, the singer also wrote the score for the movie.

12. State of Love and Trust – Pearl Jam

Eddie Vedder, Mike McCready, and Jeff Ament co-wrote this song that first appeared, Singles Soundtrack. However, it was initially slated for the group’s freshman album, Ten. The song’s lyrics reflect Vedder’s thoughts and feelings after watching the movie. It was one of the first to be recorded for the soundtrack and one of the first recorded with drummer Dave Abbruzzese.

This song was released on the group’s sixth album, Sweet Oblivion. However, it’s best known from the Singles soundtrack. The group wrote the lyrics about the effects of acid. 10. Dsylexic Heart – Paul Westerberg

Throughout the movie, many top-name groups play in various clubs. Westerburg and his band are one of them. While they are playing this song, there is an upheaval at a bar.

9. Breath And A Scream (Demo) – Pearl Jam

This song was co-written by Pearl Jam’s lead singer Eddie Vedder and guitarist Stone Gossard. The song was the first demo the group recorded. It was featured in its raw form on the movie soundtrack.

8. Drown – Smashing Pumpkins

It was the highest chart-topping song to date when the song was released. It first appeared on the Singles Soundtrack. Later, it was released on an anniversary album for Gish as well as Smashing Pumpkins Greatest Hits.

7. Birth Ritual – Soundgarden

One of the scenes in the movie is a band performing in a club. The group is Alice in Chains. Another iconic band with a brief cameo in the film was Soundgarden, who played this song. Frontman Chris Cornell played a considerable part in the movie for the soundtrack.

This song chronicles the rise and fall of frontman Andrew Wood who later died of a heroin overdose. Part of the collateral damage was his relationship with his fiancee. Many of the lines in the song focus on how these relationships are too often ruined by addiction.

4. Overblown – Mud Honey

According to Songfacts, this song is about how the Seattle Grunge music scene hit the mainstream with such intensity. Although Mudhoney was never one of the most popular of the genre, they certainly made an impact which is why they were chosen as part of this soundtrack.

3. The Battle of Evermore – Love Mongers

This group is a side project for Heart singers Nancy and Ann Wilson. Led Zeppelin initially sang the song. However, since the movie focuses on the Seattle music scene, using an iconic group from the area was a great choice.

2. May This Be Love – Jimi Hendrix

One of the quirkiest exchanges in the movie is the exchange between the character of Steve and Linda. Linda says, “I was just nowhere near your neighborhood. Look, I don’t need to be your girlfriend or anything. I just wanna know you again.” Steve responds with, “what took you so long?” She replied that she was in heavy traffic. Like most relationships, they started with a first kiss. This song was the backdrop for their initial romantic scene.

1. Seasons – Chris Cornell

It’s undeniable Cornell is one of the most prolific singer/songwriters of the ’90s. Throughout his career, he’s recorded covers that eclipse the originals. This song is one of those shining moments of creativity. In the movie, Matt Dillon plays Cliff Poncier, a musician who leaves the group, Citizen Dick. Seasons became his first solo song in the film, leading many to believe his character was Cornell.
