How Tyler, The Creator Got Inspired to Rap Again

When Tyler, the Creator started his rap career, there were probably a lot of people who doubted his success because was different than what people were used to. As one of the founders of the hip-hop collective Odd Future, Tyler got his start in the industry in the late 2000s. He began gaining more attention in the early 2010s, and lots of people quickly fell in love with his unique style. Sure, Tyler didn’t express himself the way people had come to expect from rappers, but that didn’t matter. His talent spoke for itself and it was clear that he had what it took to build a long-lasting career in the industry.

When Tyler released his debut album, Goblin, in 2011 and the project was eventually certified gold by the RIAA. Tyler followed up with four other great projects, but like most artists, he eventually reached a point where he struggled to tap into his creativity. For a while, he simply wasn’t feeling inspired to rap, but luckily for all of his fans, that isn’t the case anymore. Keep reading to find out more on how Tyler, The Creator found himself feeling inspired again.

Where Did Tyler’s Inspiration Come From?

Most creative people would probably agree that inspiration can come from anywhere, and often times it comes from the places you’d least expect. That was certainly the case for Tyler. In an Instagram Live session at the end of June 2021, Tyler said, “DJ Drama, I love you. What you did for rap — phenomenal. From all the Waynes, all the Dedications, from P the In My Mind Prequel mixtape, to Clipse for the We Got It For Cheaps, from Lupe mixtape run all the Farenheits, the Revenge of the Nerds, to JAY-Z, to Andre (3000) … to Westside Gunn for making me wanna just rap again. I love it. I love rap. It changed n***as lives.”

In an industry where artists are sometimes accused of not showing each other love, it was great to see Tyler should people out. Still, since Tyler and Westside Gunn have such different styles, lots of people were surprised to hear that Westside was instrumental in Tyler wanting to rap. For those who aren’t familiar with Westside Gunn, he is a New York-based rapper who is best known for being a member of the group Griselda. Westside Gunn has been in the industry for more than 15 years, and he has released more than a dozen projects in that time.

He is known for his gritty sound and raw lyrics and he has been able to keep up on tracks with some of the industry’s most legendary artists.

Tyler Is An Inspiration Himself

Tyler may be thankful to have found someone to inspire him, but there are a lot of people who are looking at Tyler as their personal inspiration. Since very early on in his career, Tyler has refused to conform to anyone’s expectation of him, and that’s something about him that lots of people love.

In an article on Turntable Thought, an author named Jensen Ooi discussed the impact Tyler has had on him. Jensen wrote, “To me Tyler, and to an extent OF, are the physical embodiments of “doing it on your own terms”. There were no guidelines for Tyler to follow as he adamantly carved his way out into the public consciousness. Social networking and blog sites barely passed their infancy stage, and shock rap had lost its previous addictive potency (hi, Relapse). Still, he doubled down on every stylistic choice he made, uncompromising while fulfilling his artistic vision.”

Outside of music, Tyler has contributed to entertainment in other ways. He helped create a sketch comedy show called Loiter Squad which he also starred in. The program aired for three seasons on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim. What’s most impressive about Tyler’s success is that he’s been able to achieve a lot without following the traditional path.

Now that Tyler’s creative juices are flowing again, he’ll be able to inspire even more people with his ability to think outside of the box.

Tyler’s Latest Project

In June of 2021, Tyler released his sixth studio album, Call Me If You Get Lost. The highly anticipated project has already gotten a lot of attention and it’s clear that Tyler put a lot of effort into it. The project also features guest appearances from some big names including Lil Wayne, Pharrell, and Ty Dolla $ign. If there was anyone who questioned whether or not Tyler still had it, I think it’s safe to say that the answer is yes.
