Gojira drummer reveals how Metallica behaved at the band’s latest tour concerts

Gojira drummer Mario Duplantier recalls how Metallica behaved at the band’s latest tour concerts. He also mentioned the new “Fortitude” album.

Their latest album “Fortitude” will release April 30th, 2021. This is happening after the band’s first full-length effort in five years. This album is a compilation of songs recorded and produced by Joe Duplantier from the Silver Cord Studio – Ridgewood in Gojira‘s, Queens, headquarters and mixed by Andy Wallace, who urges mankind to dream a modern future – to do so. The band started with the surprising release of the 2020-single “Another World” last year. “Fortitude” album extends Gojira’s long-standing work-related tradition to harness its music as a platform for climate advocacy, with songs like “Amazonia” and “The Chant.”

In a recent interview with Overdrive, Gojira’s Mario Duplantier talks about Metallica and upcoming new album:

“Yeah, the highlight for me was when Metallica called us. We were a small band and pretty much unknown at the time. We were considered an underground band and then one day we get this call from Metallica’s management asking us to join them on some live dates and it was just incredible.

That has been the highlight of my career so far. Oh… also when I got to jam with the guys in the Metallica when we were in Russia! That was mind-blowing! It was the best moment in my life.”

And added about the new album:

“I think the ultimate goal was to get rid of our darker side and it’s been a very tough process, as we try to be uplifting when we can… but in some ways that can come across a little dark. What Joe meant there was we had nothing special to complain about when compared to ‘Magma.’ On that album, we had lost our mother, which was a huge blow for us.

When we were writing ‘Fortitude,’ it was like the stars lined up for us. The success of the band was at an all-time high, the tours were going great, so we just had to write songs. It wasn’t like we were in a difficult position of emotional pain; like we were on ‘Magma.’ However, there are some melancholic moments on ‘Fortitude’ like ‘The Trails’ for example, and that’s just in our DNA to write like that. But with songs like, ‘New Found,’ ‘Into the Storm,’ and ‘Hold On’, you’ll find a lot of light in those songs.

In fact, it’s the first time I really felt that we had created songs that were not so dark as our previous stuff. It’s a great feeling, as it’s almost like achieving a goal that we wanted. We wanted to find balance in our life, as well as our music.”
