Star Trek has been a cult phenomenon for decades. It has a huge universe along with its cultural influence beyond works of science fiction. So with a science-fiction universe like that, which has time travel, multiple universes, concurrent shows, and entirely new timelines, it can seem exhausting and frightening to watch the series all over. But don’t worry anymore.

Here are the best ways of watching every Star Trek series and movies in the right order in case you want to rewatch the show to remember for any reason, or to watch it for the first time. All works. We give you quote notes beside them to understand their timeline orders better.

1 – Star Trek: Enterprise (2151-2161)

Star Trek: Enterprise is the original series’ prequel which has the earliest timeline of the series. It originally aired from September 26, 2001, to May 13, 2005, on UPN.

“The story revolves in the 22nd century, a hundred years before the events of The Original Series and just prior to the formation of the United Federation of Planets. It follows the adventures of the Enterprise, Earth’s first starship capable of traveling at warp five, as it explores the galaxy and encounters various alien species.”

2 – Star Trek: Discovery Season 1 & 2 (2255-)

The seventh series in the Star Trek franchise was the first series in the franchise since Star Trek: Enterprise concluded in 2005. Star Trek: Discovery begins roughly a decade before the events of the original Star Trek series, and follows the crew of the USS Discovery on various adventures. This conflict ends with the Discovery traveling to the 32nd century, more than 900 years into their future.

3 – Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (2255-)

Pike, Number One, and Spock are reprising their roles from Discovery in Strange New Worlds. These characters all originated on the original Star Trek series for the second season of Discovery to help align that series with the wider franchise. So this series is filling in the decade of time between Discovery and The Original Series and tells Christopher Pike’s adventures with Spock and Number One aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise.

4 – Star Trek: The Original Series (2265-2269)

Star Trek: The Original Series follows the adventures of the starship USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) and its crew. Normally, it was the first series that started everything. Let’s remember the story more detailed by their introduction during each episode’s opening credits stated:

“Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before.”

5 – Star Trek: The Animated Series (2269-2270)

The Animated Series continues right after where The Original Series left with the same characters. It is also voiced by the series’ main cast. It is set in the 23rd century when Earth is part of a United Federation of Planets. So it follows the adventures of the Starfleet vessel USS Enterprise as it explores the Milky Way galaxy.

6 – Star Trek: The Motion Picture (2273)

It is the first installment in the Star Trek film series. After 3 years of adventures aboard the Enterprise, Kirk becomes an Admiral at Starfleet headquarters in San Francisco. A mysterious cloud of energy begins wreaking havoc in space so Starfleet Command assigns Enterprise to intercept the cloud entity as the ship is the only one within range.
7 – Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (2285)
USS Enterprise faces off against the genetically-engineered tyrant Khan Noonien Singh, who has actually first appeared around 2265, during their original five-year mission. And in 2285, Khan is released from exile and seeking for his revenge on Kirk. To do that, Khan tries to reach a powerful space weapon known as the Genesis device.

8 – Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (2285)

The Search for Spock is The Wrath of Khan’s continuation. Kirk learns that Spock’s spirit, or katra, is held in the mind of Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy, Kirk and company steal the Enterprise to return Spock’s body to his homeworld. It is the third film in the Star Trek franchise and opened on June 1, 1984.

9 – Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (2286/1986)

It is the last film of the movie series which also follows and completes The story arc begun in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982) and continued in The Search for Spock. So Kirk returns to earth to save Spock, but he realizes later somehow that he needs to go back in time to do that. The Voyage Home was released on November 26, 1986.

10 – Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (2287)

It is actually the fifth installment in the Star Trek film series and takes place shortly after the events of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.  So it follows the crew of the USS Enterprise-A as they confront the renegade Vulcan Sybok, who is searching for God at the center of the galaxy. The Final Frontier was released in North America on June 9, 1989.

11 – Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (2293)

The Undiscovered Country takes place after six years from The Final Frontier. Kirk and McCoy get blamed for the assassination of the Klingon chancellor. So the Enterprise-A and Sulu’s USS Excelsior, must investigate and save the galaxy from war starting together.

12 – Star Trek: The Next Generation (2364-2370)

The Next Generation goes forward seventy years to the 24th century after The Undiscovered Country.  It follows the adventures of a Starfleet starship, the USS Enterprise, in its exploration of the Milky Way galaxy when Earth becomes a part of the United Federation of Planets. Humans and Klingons might seem to find peace but still, there is still a myriad of hostile alien life forms that Captain Picard and his crew to face. It aired from September 28, 1987, to May 23, 1994.

13 – Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (2369-2375)

After five years in The Next Generation, the events of Deep Nine begin to run at the same time as Picard’s Voyage. the eponymous space station Deep Space Nine locates neighboring to a wormhole that connects the Federation territory to the Gamma Quadrant on the far side of the Milky Way galaxy. So Commander Sisko deals with everything from unnecessary and stupid fights to the threat of Dominion War.

14 – Star Trek Generations (2371)

Star Trek Generations follows after events of Star Trek VI. Even if it seems earlier from the Deep Space Nine, the movie torches the passing of Kirk to Picard and conclusies Picard and his crew’s adventures about the Enterprise-D. Star Trek Generations was released in the United States on November 18, 1994.

15 – Star Trek: Voyager (2371-2378)

Voyager follows the adventures of the Starfleet vessel USS Voyager as it attempts to return home after being stranded in the Delta Quadrant on the far side of the Milky Way galaxy. Captain Janeway must unite the two factions and lead them on their way back home which is 70,000 light-years away.

16 – Star Trek: First Contact (2373/2063)

Captain Jean Luc Picard awakens from a nightmare in which he relived his assimilation by the cybernetic Borg six years earlier. Admiral Hayes informs him of a new Borg threat against Earth. Picard disobeys orders and takes the newly-commissioned U.S.S to patrol the Neutral Zone in case of Romulan aggression. They find themselves 300 years in the past somehow battling. So they try helping preserve Earth’s first-ever contact with aliens to protect their future.

17 – Star Trek: Nemesis (2379)

Deep Space Nine and Voyager already concluded after four years, so Picard and the Enterprise take their final mission together. Enterprise is ordered on a diplomatic mission to Romulus and they find out Shinzon is a clone of Picard, which secretly created by the Romulans to plant a high-ranking spy into the Federation.

18 – Star Trek: Lower Decks (2380)

Lower Decks is the first animated series created for All Access, and the first animated Star Trek series since the 1973–74 series Star Trek: The Animated Series. It follows the junior support crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos in the year 2380 after the events of Nemesis.

Star Trek: Lower Decks premiered on August 6, 2020, and its first season ran for 10 episodes until October and it still streams exclusively on CBS All Access. A second season is in production and is expected to premiere in 2021.

19 – Star Trek: Picard (2399-)

Picard is retired and working his family’s vineyard after Twenty years. He mourns the loss of his friends and the planet Romulus for its destruction after the planet’s sun went supernova in 2387. In the meantime a stranger comes for his help, so he goes for another ‘last’ mission.

20 – Star Trek: Discovery Season 3

The third season of the American television series Star Trek: Discovery follows the crew of the USS Discovery as they travel to the future, over 900 years after the events of the original Star Trek series. A fourth season was officially announced in October 2020 too. 

21- Kelvin Timeline

A Romulan mining ship gets sucked into the ensuing black hole, emerging in the year 2233. It’s a whole another timeline. The former timeline is the ones we have been listed by now and known as the Prime Timeline. It’s actually because it’s set up in another reality. The official Star Trek website defines canon as comprising the television series and feature films of the franchise.

22 – Captain Nero

Captain Nero destroys the U.S.S. Kelvin so this creates an alternate reality known as the Kelvin Timeline. The following trilogy of films takes place in this new reality, which we recommend viewing after the entirety of the Prime Timeline.

23- Star Trek (2258 Kelvin Timeline)

A more rebellious and fatherless Kirk is convinced by Captain Pike to join Starfleet in another reality in 2258. Kirk, Spock, and the rest of the crew face a vengeful Nero as their first mission. They meet a familiar face from a different time at the same time.

24 – Star Trek Into Darkness (2259 Kelvin Timeline)

Kirk violates the Prime Directive to save Spock and the people of the planet Nibiru from a volcano one year later. So as a result of these events, they demote Kirk but that doesn’t take long. Because Kirk is being needed to chase down a terrorist, so they reinstate him back again. This is actually someone familiar to the Enterprise crew in a different timeline, Khan.

25 – Star Trek Beyond (2263 Kelvin Timeline)

The Enterprise and Kirk start their mission which will last for five years. They must go somewhere no one has gone before in 2260. Beyond takes place in 2263, the Enterprise is being destroyed by an alien ship. So the crew must gather and beat their mutated leader.

26 – Star Trek: Short Treks (2239-3300 Prime Timeline)

Each episode of Star Trek: Short Treks tells a stand-alone story that serves as an “opportunity for deeper storytelling and exploration of key characters and themes that fit into Star Trek: Discovery and the expanding Star Trek universe.”
