BUSINESS BLITZ CHALLENGE: During the month of June, United Way partnered with a community challenger, Spherion Staffing Services, who matched dollar-for-dollar contributions from all local businesses, as part of the United Way’s fourth-annual Business Blitz Challenge. The initial goal was exceeded, and the challenge raised more than $11,000. Businesses who accepted the challenge included: Access Health Care Physicians, Ackley Dental Group, AMZ Insurance Group, Brewer and Sons Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Carter Froman, Cellular Sales/Verizon Wireless, Charles Schwab, Christ the Savior Greek Orthodox Church, Direct Lending Group, Focus Solutions Group, Hartland Homes, Holmes Drafting Service, Home Instead Senior Care, Integrity Pest Control Services, Liz Casner-Tropic Shores Realty, Mid Florida Community Services, Mirage Hair Studio, Moss Chiropractic, North American Tiles, Performance Media Solutions Group, Palmwood Construction, Raymond James, Sen. Wilton Simpson, Toniann Ciappetta-Tropic Shores Realty and Tree Care by Robert Miller.

TIJUANA FLATS CONTEST: Tijuana Flats is offering guests a chance to win free tacos for a year during a scratch-off promotion through Aug. 31. Customers 18 and older will receive a scratch-of game piece that contains a guaranteed prize, as well as a chance to win the year-long taco giveaway. MEDICAL EDUCATION PROGRAM GETS NEW LEADER: Oak Hill Hospital appointed Victoria J. Varela as the hospital’s administrative director of its Graduate Medical Education Program. Varela, who holds a master’s degree in health administration from Pennsylvania State University, comes to Oak Hill Hospital from Chicago, where she served as associate executive director for three review committees at the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

TIP A COP: The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office will hold a “Tip a Cop” event from 4 to 9 p.m. Aug. 7 at Carrabba’s Italian Grill, 12957 Cortez Blvd., Spring Hill. All monies collected will benefit Hernando County Sheriff’s Charities.

HABITAT RIBBON CUTTING: A ribbon-cutting ceremony for Habitat for Humanity at noon Aug. 7 at the newest house that has been built at 16131 Daytona St., Brooksville. Visitors can meet the new executive director. The ribbon-cutting will be provided by the Greater Hernando County Chamber of Commerce.
