Wrexham to sign former Man United star and 'next Paul Scholes' Nick Powell

Wrexham could be on the verge of their first big statement signing since their promotion into League Two, as they eye a move for Nick Powell.

Sure it wasn't exactly a 'fairytale' that saw Wrexham get back into the Football League last season by becoming National League champions but it sure was exciting.

The Club owned by Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds captured the hearts of many through their Disney + documentary and the signing of Ben Foster towards the end of the season added extra intrigue.

Foster initially joined for the final seven weeks of the campaign but is now staying on to help push for back-to-back promotions up into League One.

After their signing of Paul Mullin in 2021, football fans are expecting that the Hollywood owners could make some more signings above the club's level this summer.

Foster certainly attempted to get involved with that when he attempted to persuade World XI teammate Nani to join him in Wales during Soccer Aid.

Manager Phil Parkinson had warned fans that signings to improve his team this summer could be tough to make but it looks like that won't be the case.

According to the Sun, the Red Dragons are on the verge of signing Powell after the midfielder was released by Stoke City at the end of last season.

Powell started his career at Crewe Alexandra where he impressed enough to catch the eye of Sir Alex Ferguson but before he moved to Manchester United scored the winning goal in the 2012 League Two play-off final.

He was one of Fergie's last signings at Old Trafford and got to play one season at the club under the legendary Scotsman.

He scored on his debut for the club against Wigan Athletic, who he would later play for, but went on to make just nine appearances across four seasons for the club despite once being tipped to take over from Paul Scholes.

Unfortunately his most famous moment for the Premier League side was when Louis van Gaal baffled everyone by bringing the midfielder on for Juan Mata when they were behind in a must win Champions League group game.

After three years at Wigan he moved to Stoke where he played 119 times, scoring 28 goals and getting 10 assists, before being released.

The 29-year-old could soon be reunited with his former club, as Wrexham take on Erik ten Hag's side in a pre-season friendly in San Diego next month.
